If you don't mind manual focus there's also the Leica 100/2.8 APO-Macro-Elmarit-R has the reputation as one of the best macro lenses produced for any camera.

I looked at this option but the required adapters (R to L and Elpro for 1:1) and the lacking weather sealing and AF make it less competitive for me. The Sigma was cheap enough to give it a shot.

To each their own.🙂  I've used mine for shooting mushrooms in damp and wet undergrowth for many years with no ill effects.  I rarely use the 1:2 - 1:1 Elpro but I often use the 2x APO-Extender, which gives me a 200 (f/5.6) APO-Macro lens, which is very useful to me.  I wouldn't use AF for macro work even if the 100/2.8 had it because I'm mostly shooting at f/8 or f/11 on a tripod to increase the limited macro depth of field.
