Voigtlander APO-LANTHAR 50mm f/2 Aspherical VM lens to be announced soon

Interesting is the nicely round aperture at F/2.8 and F/5.6 (F5.6 on picture with some stacking errors).

Dear Jacktaka,

I really appreciate your review. I think it is very similar to reviews you posted in this thread: https://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/305393-small-compact-lenses/page/3/?tab=comments#comment-4119421

@steve 1959 why so different opinion about Jacktaka reviews between 35 Lux and CV 50 APO? Just curious.

1] The reviewer stated in his review of the summilux FLE that he had used the lens for 3 years and had tried its main rival the distagon.

2] His sample comparison images for that review were quite large .

3] He posted a nice selection of real life pictures taken with the FLE.

So i was impressed that "jack" had used this lens for 3 years and his high praise for the summilux as well the distagon except for its size/ergonomics which made perfect sense to me.

Big difference between the respective reviews in my view.

Lots of opinions out there about this lens. I'll wait for Sean Reid to evaluate it. His reviews are exemplary.

I am also a subscriber. He is the reference point imo. Hopefully he gets his hands on a copy soon and we get a comparison with the Leica APO

Of course, the best reviews are ones that show good pictures taken with the gear; otherwise, it's up to your imagination to see the full potential of the lens/camera/etc.

It takes me months to take enough pictures for that, and since this lens was released less than 1 week ago, I don't have real-world samples. Thus, I titled it "preliminary review." My aim is to be as helpful as possible to those contemplating buying this lens immediately after its release. I will update the review with good pictures once I have them.

Also, I have updated the review to include results for flare control, purple fringing, vignetting, and field curvature, if you want to check it out.

Thanks,

I like your reviews and gave positive feedback on your summilux fle review and your comparison with the zeiss distagon which is my favourite lens of the five  i own.

I just found the voigtlander apo review flawed and expressed my opinion but i think your revision of the review works well and i look forward to your future review of the same lens after extensive use.

Mine delivered from Robert White at 10.15 this morning. Preordered Friday and sent out 5pm last night. Posh box (for VC) and chunky lens. No specs in box but filter size is 52mm – will get one to replace pinch cap. Lovely damped aperture ring (better than with most Leicas) and smooth focus. First shot in dreary weather conditions and colours on M10R look very natural indeed.

So: great performance from R White and kudos to Royal Mail too for its special delivery service: nowadays they email re customers with tracking info:– never used to happen!

Jacktaka, I like the work on your site and your reviews, but that first scene of the jiggling hood is super annoying! Gives me a headache, I almost stopped reading right there. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with a bayonet mount hood having a bit of play. If it were tight it would likely be difficult to press in for removal. Although I will say that like most of these vintage style round, vented hoods, this one provides very little actual shading or flare protection, not that this lens really needs it.

I encourage everyone nitpicking jacktaka to death to post their own perfect review.

No good deed goes unpunished.

I found the article very helpful, though wished he had more lenses to compare with.  The criticism might have more to do with it being the first one.

Thanks for pointing this out. In fact I had a 52mm filter and found it would not fit. Voigtlander's own web. page said 'information. not available' and I obviously looked at wrong VC lens data on Robert White's site. 49mm it is.

The info is somewhat hidden in Japanese language on the Cosina website:

^interesting comparisons. There’s so many good 50’s out there, old and new.  I picked up the APO Lanthar and I am super impressed with it for general purpose. It doesn’t displace my v2 summilux for people though. To ME, that lens is the perfect balance of aesthetic imperfections for people photography. The APO is impressively sharp even wide open though.

Hi, I just discovered this interesting thread with excellent contributions, of which I read the pages from the first Lanthar shipment date on. I got mine on January 29. Up to now,

I have made over 100 pics, trying it out. I do not test - this is done by professionals - I simply try my lenses and bodies out in the field.

I am just a humble hobby-photographer, Leica M user and owner since 1988. See you ... 🙂

(I posted this in the wrong thread first. Sorry.)

I posted bokeh trial pics here #32 :

FYI there are rumors of a Voigtlander 35mm APO-LANTHAR being released soon-ish

I’m looking forward to seeing this one also. Would be great to have both lenses (50 and 35) that match the way they draw color.
