Nothing exhaustive, but here are a few comparison on an M10 Monochrom with the Summilux ASPH, C Sonnar, and Apo-Lanthar.

very interesting.

commenting on sharpness, detail and contrast only - assuming you got the focus right

the summilux and voigtlander APO are in a different league to the Zeiss

between them the Voigtlander is sharper, but it doesn't have 1.4

Frankly, I don't like what I see. Contrast, contrast, contrast, high-res: the lens doesn't have a beautiful, rounded rendering. I'd much prefer a Rigid Summicron or a C-Sonnar anyday. BTW: I had two Apo- Summicron's  that I promptly sold

Hi, thank you for sharing your experiences, and your clear and open judgement... ---

Assessing lens performance is not easy, especially for humble hobby photographers like yours truly.

(In hi-fi equipment, laymen typically appreciate salient features, like treble or bass. Professional sound engineers use speakers with balanced performance.

The same goes for lenses, I think.)

I am simply trying out the Lanthar in typical use cases (for me). I bought it, I use it, I keep it. I have other 50s, so I want to know how it fits into my portfolio.

After colonel's posting #282 above, I also took the Sonnar for a photo-walk through Wiesbaden/D I did a week before with the Lanthar.

Indeed... it appears that the contrast and resolution of APO-Lanthar 50 are very high. If you are a fan of focus peaking as an aid to manual focus you might love the lens. I have never seen as much assist information displayed at f2. In fact, it might be preferable to turn focus peaking off to compose the shot. In the photos I posted above the direct sunlight influences the contrast overly... this portrait of my wife on a day of difficult personal news might be a more general sample of how the lens can draw people in natural light. Probably too sharp for wedding photography.

As Leica's 50 f2 APO lenses will all be coded for recognition, it is not listed in the 50mm options for selection in the M10R menu. Any hints as to which setting you consider useful for the VC APO Lanthar?

Hi, on the M9 I manually select #11816/11819/11825/11826 (Summicron V2). I do not have my lenses coded (unless they are when bought), because I use 1 lens/camera/day,

and do not carry an equipment bag. And before manually coding (or selecting automatic coding for coded lenses) I take a pic of the lens ... ---

A few cityscape pics (Leica M9 - Lanthar 50, f 8; handheld, as always), in Mainz/D :

Crony thank you for this photos. I'm now convinced the rendering is not to my liking. You literally saved me 1000 euro.

Hi, there are more pics to come. Wait and see ...🙂

(I shall show a few of the SONNAR and the Lanthar later, which are quite interesting, too, I think.)

Perhaps we would better compare colour, contrast and tonality from unprocessed out of camera jpegs - just resize them.

Hi, I see your point. - I show pictures the way I take them, and process them, for me. - A professional tester would take your approach.

Here is a window light portrait made with the 50mm APO Lanthar on a Leica M240, ISO 1600, at f2.4.

Hi, it's most welcome that more Lanthar owners show their pics in this thread. So, we get a more complete impression of how it performs, also on different bodies ... ---

I don’t care what lens this is, this mini series is beautiful. It tells a little story, and it tells it wonderfully.

Thanks for sharing!
