Habit, mainly. I tend to use hoods for protection against knocks and fingers rather than against flare. The front element on this lens is set deep, and the hood makes the combination a bit bulky, so I leave it at home. In this case it seemed resistant to flare even in this difficult scenario.

The front elements of the SL zooms are very close to the front, so I usually use them with the hoods.

My habit is the opposite............I always use a hood, it was drummed into me when I went on a photo trip with some professional photographers many moons ago :) :) :)

The 90-280 Sl on the TL2 :)  The building is about 1/2 mile away.

Matt,

I'm thinking of selling the 80-200 R4 and buying the SL 90-280. The 80-200 is a fine lens, but I'm not in love with trying to handhold and nail focus at 300mm.

Are you happy with the 90-280 on the TL?  Is it fairly easy to use handheld at the equivalent 420mm?

Thanks,

Rob

Rob,

The 90-280 is the main reason I keep the SL. It is a spectacular lens. Sharp, IS, fast AF, great character. I only tried it today on the TL2, but it is a winner (despite an obvious lens/body imbalance). For shorter focal lengths, I prefer the S.

I can't speak for the R lenses - I've never used them..

Best,

Matt

I like this photo, but on my monitor I struggle a little to see what is in focus.  I wonder if it would have benefited from a smaller aperture and a little less exposure?

This is the original sooc. It is in focus at the proper exposure. The picture I had posted is a more painterly version which expressed how I felt walking the beech woods. I had bracketed the shot but have not yet had the chance to develop the HDR because I’m on the road on an iPad.

Thanks for posting it - I'm sure it's sharper in raw.  On the web, it lacks bite (maybe it doesn't need it) - I assume the single tree left of centre is the subject.  It just doesn't stand out.  I'm not being critical (in a negative sense), just trying to understand the image, that's all.

My interest was the curve of the path. Longwood does an exceptional job of laying out boardwalks and bridges to enhance the views.
