cumirebus Posted October 31, 2020 Share #1 Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi guys, I am going to purchase my SL2 soon and very excited about it, been reading tons of stuff etc, but still couldn't decide if it's better for me to go with the bundled 24 - 90mm lens or the 50mm lens (they are priced the same here) ? My work is mainly lifestyle photography and portrait (outdoor and studio settings). Thank you! Edited October 31, 2020 by cumirebus

scott kirkpatrick Posted October 31, 2020 Share #2 Posted October 31, 2020 If you have a range of settings that you need to work in, you will find the 24-90 more flexible and excellent in quality. Wait a bit and select some SL Summicrons later on. They are much lighter and faster to work with than the SL 50/1.4. I assume you are buying one or the other of the two SL lenses being offered as "kits" in order to avoid the import duties on German lenses.
Slender Posted October 31, 2020 Share #3 Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) I switched from M system to SL system (would have loved to be able to keep both but that's for another time), with the 24-90. It is a fantastic lens, a real do-it-all-with-excellence. Bokeh is wonderfull in nearly all situations, AF is stuningly fast and deadly accurate. I love it! Would complement with a bright prime (SL50 1.4 surely... same filter size and a real gap between f3.5 and f1.4... seems more sexy in rendering than the Apo-Summicron-SL). Check this guy's blog, he has very comprehensive reviews of SL system with the 50 mostly, make sure to explore the rest of his blog. I am not sure about what to think of the work but the user feedback is plethoric http://findingrange.com/2019/08/29/leica-summilux-sl-50mm-f1-4-asph-lens-review/ Edited October 31, 2020 by Slender

I have the 50 1.4, the 24-90 and the 35 and 90 Summicrons. The 24-90 is on the body 80% or more of the time.
hirohhhh Posted October 31, 2020 Share #5 Posted October 31, 2020 If it's your first lens, I'd suggest going with 24-90 first. It's the most versatile yet incredible lens. I'm happy I made this decision when I bought my first SL 5 years ago, and despite having other lenses now, I'd say most of the time, I used 24-90. caissa Posted October 31, 2020 Share #6 Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) I would rather take the SL 16-35 and either the SL 75 or the SL 90. I don’t know if there are “bundles” for those lenses ... For portrait the 90mm is famous and a classic. (And better than the 24-90). For most other things the 16-35 is smaller than the 24-90 and in my eyes of extraordinary quality. (Better than the 24-90). Excellent for landscape or travel, probably also for lifestyle. Great for indoor fotos, because it is wider. You can still add a 1.4/50 later if you like. Due to the lack of OIS the 16-35 delivers higher optical performance than the 24-90...and due to the internal zooming it is much more compact (esp. when taking off the lens hood)... cumirebus Posted November 1, 2020 Author Share #8 Posted November 1, 2020 Many thanks to all that has responded with their opinion and advice! seems like the always most asked questions (can get kind of annoying i know!) so really appreciate it as it's not a small purchase : ) (been saving close to a year for this)
MediaFotografie Posted November 1, 2020 Share #9 Posted November 1, 2020 no no no, just take the Summicron SL 35mm - it's the best lens of all and much more versatile than SL 50mm... (ok, my own opinion, but Peter Karbe says the same) 😀 1

As I understand the OP is choosing between those two bundles.

Slender Posted November 2, 2020 Share #12 Posted November 2, 2020 Besides Peter Karbe is a not a photographer. I really like the man and the science he represents and I enjoy his presentation but oooh.... the "Why stop down" kills me. Cartier Bresson and the others at "f8 and be present" surely dont care for lenses that starts to show diffraction from f2.8 "because they are so good wide open why would you close it down". Sure they are great if you shoot everything at night from some meters away.... but I honestly believe that for a one lens bundle to start with the SL, it is hard to beat the 24-90 at its versatility. Sure for portrait the 90f2 would punch above in terms of sharpness, but you will spend more time fighting the shallow depth of field (if you choose to have eye lash #27 to #34 in focus... or throwing all this sharpness away in PS with the smooth skin tools 😅 😁 This doesnt apply to what are in my opinion his best creations: Summilux 50 (M and SL). Use it however you like. The Summilux 35 FLE feels botched in comparaison IMHO.
cumirebus Posted November 2, 2020 Author Share #13 Posted November 2, 2020 (edited) Thanks @mediafotografie for your advise. Yes the 35mm is not bundled with SL2 in my country. The bundled 50mm will save me almost a thousand dollars and that's alot! @Slender I just booked my SL2 with 50mm! now can't wait for it to arrive! Slender Posted November 2, 2020 Share #14 Posted November 2, 2020 Bold move! I had to face the same dilema and went for the 24-90, but the sl50 is defo my next acquisition.
