dantemi Posted October 24, 2020 Share #62 Posted October 24, 2020 hope that the Q2 monochrome will see an increase in resolution of the EVF and rear display to pair the SL2 which is awesome...

I saw the suffering that was endured in the "Q2 Availability" thread from ~18 months ago. I think that release cycle is pretty typical of any new Leica product.. initial release at launch with limited availability, then a very slow trickle of product over the next 4-5 months until inventory catches up with demand. That's why I like to pre-order with a smaller dealer, even if they only get one or two, as long as you're at the top of the list it should work out. I avoid the biggies like B&H/Adorama just too much competition.. And even the Leica boutiques, they always prioritize their loyal customers even if you happened to be high up on the list. Not complaining, that's the way the world works, but just why I stick to my smaller dealer. Edited October 25, 2020 by nameBrandon
stewartweir Posted October 25, 2020 Share #66 Posted October 25, 2020 IF Leica introduce this its not going to take many sales from the M10M assuming they reduce the MP to 24MP. If they do use the same sensor as the M10M then its going to sell well I would think. As a niche camera of a niche camera Leica is taking a bit of a gamble but using the same body as the Q2 isnt going to raise production costs too much. Someone at Leica really needs to start adding quality film presets. Appreciate they wont be wanting to call them HP5/TriX/Acros etc but those presets would go a very long way to enhancing sales for this type of niche camera. The existing Q2 is 47MP, so my guess is they'll just keep using that sensor with the bayer filter removed. Manufacturing costs and all.. 100% agree on the (in-body) film presets. I always liked how Fuji did that. Edited October 25, 2020 by nameBrandon

Regards sensor size I guess the question is whether a 47MP Q2M would take potential sales from the M10M? That 47MP also gives a quality 35/50mm lens however if its a 24MP the Q2M really is just a 28mm thereby saving potential M10M sales. Or they could use the Q2M as a gateway tease to owning an M10M? Who really knows what's in the heads of those Wetzler folk? Im sure Leica have considered improving their preset options.

I think you're probably correct in that they see the Q2M as a "gateway" to the M10M.. it's a lower barrier to entry and they'll hope to convert those Q2M owners to M10M owners eventually. Definitely an interested choice Leica is making.. I"m happy they're doing it but I wouldn't be surprised is they agonized internally over the decision to release, or not release a Q2M. On a side note, I wonder if they'll refer to it as QM or Q2M..

stewartweir Posted October 26, 2020 Share #71 Posted October 26, 2020 So here's a question - Given how good monochrome software conversion is (especially Nik Effex) is there going to be a big reason to buy a Q2M over a Q2? Yes tonal range will be increased BUT would anyone really be able to tell the difference between a converted Q2 mono image to an M10M for example? ISO performance should be markedly improved.. my guess is by at least 1.5-2 stops. Removal of the bayer filter should result in a sharper images as well. That being said, I think you've hit on the often asked and fundamental question regarding monochrome sensors... and it's one that is hard to answer. I would wager most photographers couldn't reliably pick out a B/W image from a Monochrom sensor vs a RGB converted B/W image. It's similar to Full Frame vs APS-C. Can most pick out a full frame image vs APS-C..? Again, I bet most can't, but some can with a good deal of accuracy. I guess the ultimate proof comes down to the economics of it. It's hard to argue with results, and the results from Leica's monochrom sales speak for themselves. There is a supportable niche for monochrome cameras.. They flat out sell because people are willing to pay for them. We've seen this with the M9M, M246, M10M, etc... Inherently there is intrinsic value being derived since they are selling. Now, whether that value is aligned to the technical image quality differences is hard to answer.. it could very well be that a good portion of that value lies in the perception and prestige of having a Monochrom. My hunch is that for most people a Monochrom camera is probably not worth it... but clearly, to a small group of photographers, the difference is quantifiable and worth spending thousands of dollars / euros / pounds on.

I really didn't have to wait too long- compared to other people. B/H which is my Go- to for everything currently has the Q2 on BO. I'll bet they will be backed up too. My Q2 was my first Leica so naturally i went to a Boutique- it added to the purchase. I made a Mini Vacation out of the whole experience. I plant to do the same thing with the Q2M. I crop a lot with my Q2, and imagine would do the same with Q2M. Noise and resolution would be more an issue what you aggressively crop. There were plenty articles comparing Leica monochromes against their color counterparts, and the differences are relatively subtle on a whole frame of picture (usually less than small differences made in post processing). Being restricted to monochrome should be a welcome creative restraint. I forced myself in shooting BW JPG using color cameras for a while, but could not resist adding RAW as backup (and ended up often getting back to color in post processing). Having a camera that cannot shoot color at all makes a huge difference. 2

stewartweir Posted October 27, 2020 Share #76 Posted October 27, 2020 So I asked my local official Leica dealer here in the UK how much to reserve a Q2M. The answer was £4995. They didn't know whether that was the UK price but it was the "most likely price" and they didn't know when but "November into December is a possibility". For now Im going to sit back and wait and see what the exact specs are.

nwphil Posted October 28, 2020 Share #79 Posted October 28, 2020 I someone regret selling the M8, as it had an unique b7w tonality and able to produce IR-like frames with filters. Been thinking of a monochrome but the possibility a Q2-M intrigues ne in a good way - already set this thread to follow, so waiting to see if it this release will happen

I could for sure tell the difference – Almost every image I've seen shot with the M Monochrom looks flat, IMO. Maybe most MM shooters are not using yellow/orange/red/green filters in the right situations (red for sky, green for portrait, etc.).
