Graafber Posted October 20, 2020 Share #41 Posted October 20, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) Can imagine the Q2 monochrome can be interesting for people who mainly shoot color with the M10 and than use the Q2 monochrome for bnw experience. Like i use this reasoning the other way around, I shoot mainly bnw with my Leica M10 Monochrone and I use the Q2 for colors.

jaapv Posted October 20, 2020 Share #42 Posted October 20, 2020 Although sensor resolution and film resolution are basically incomparable values, it may be an indication that normal film will have a maximum resolution of 80 lp/mm @ 50% contrast.

It's probably been over a year since I put a roll of film through it. On a serious note I am not the target audience for a Q2 monochrome. I'm mostly happy with post processing BW conversions. When not I will break out the film camera. For travel photography, you could carry a comprehensive Leica kit, including a Q2, an M10 Mono and several M lenses and still have a lighter kit than an RB67 and a lens or two.

Not comparable indeed. Because digital needs clean pixels for bayer interpolation to be effective. On the other hand film do not any interpolation. Each grain is light sensitive at the right colour. Think of it as a foveon sensor. So it may be okay with 10% contrast. Film is also with non telecentric lens. Whereas digital needs telecentric one. Not quite, because we still have the merging of Airy Disks aspect, but yes, that is why I assumed 50% contrast to come to some kind of comparison. At any rate, the different nature of film and sensor resolution will always make discussions like these inconclusive. Using MTF curves is more productive than simple numbers. nicci78 Posted October 21, 2020 Share #46 Posted October 21, 2020 Of course it is too different. Just like comparing knife oil painting with aquarelle. The resulting look of the image will be far too different. Especially in the sky. You cannot mistaken black and white negatives with Leica digital Monochrom. nicci78 Posted October 21, 2020 Share #47 Posted October 21, 2020 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I really missed the endless playability of Monochrom DNG. And also the art behind choosing the right colour filter, instead of relying on Lightroom colour mixer. Colour mixer has lots of virtue. But image quality is lower than proper Monochrom. Choosing the right colour filter is easier, faster and much more rewarding : no post processing required. But still possible. nicci78 Posted October 21, 2020 Share #48 Posted October 21, 2020 Actually M Monochrom spoiled me. I stopped making B&W since I sold it and my last film body. I cannot stand for converted colour to B&W. I feel like I got double punishments with desaturate colour. I lose twice the resolution and sensitivity. For example M10-R provides 100-50K ISO whereas M10-Monochrom will get you 160-100K ISO. But highest ISO will be way cleaner. Also think, that when you play with colour mixer : you only get 1/4 of total pixels as red colour. 1/4 as blue and 1/2 as green. Some colours will break faster in post processing
vedivv Posted October 21, 2020 Share #49 Posted October 21, 2020 Q2 monochrome could benefit existing Q2 ownership. I love the Q2 lens hood and never bothered with filters on Q2. With Q2 monochrome, I imagine many people will need to use different color filters (I frequency switch between yellow and red). As much as I love the current Q2 lens hood, it is certainly not conducive to filter use. Perhaps we will see a new official lens hood from Leica? You will have to use the aesthetic ring instead of the hood or LIM’S hood. I plan to differentiate Q2 and Q2 Monochrom this way : colour Q2 with hood and handgrip. Q2 Monochrom with thumbrest but without hood. Edited October 22, 2020 by nicci78

nicci78 Posted October 22, 2020 Share #55 Posted October 22, 2020 Maybe same as M10 Monocrom vs M10-R. M10-R has Leica red dot M10 Monochrom is black chrome only, without any logo, nor script. My guess is that Q2 Monochrom, will just be plain black without any logo. Maybe another kind of black paint or another leatherette. But it will certainly be discreet and all black for sure. What about the price ? M10 Monochrom is only 210€ more than M10-R. A Q2 Monochrom at 5,200€ could be sweet. That way it would be 3,000€ less than M10 Monochrom. Just like Q2 is 3,000€ less than M10-R.

Just like Q2 is 3,000€ less than M10-R I’m a happy owner of the 10m ...love it to bits....but what makes this interesting is that it might not be too much more expensive than the 28mm f/2 summicron lens which I don’t have. Having a f1.7 with macro options in the beautiful Q package might be a no brainer for me.
PF Bentley Posted October 23, 2020 Share #59 Posted October 23, 2020 I think a Monochrome version is great, but many of us out here are not 28mm types and the crop mode is not the same has seeing full frame 35mm and using all the pixels. It’s frustrating. I would buy one with a 35mm lens - even a color version.
38wadcutter Posted October 23, 2020 Author Share #60 Posted October 23, 2020 With the 47MP capacity on the Q2, you can set the crop at 35mm and get higher res images/pics, about 30MP, than you ever could on the Q. Problem solved and you get to see all the stuff outside the frame lines, just like on the M10.
