I have a "user" M60. That means it has been used as a camera rather than a collector's piece. It's not abused, but there are a few wear spots, etc.

Should I trade for an M10-D? Is an M10-D "better?" Feature wise, sure, but this is the Escher-esque world of up is down, minimalism is maximal, where more is less and less is more, more or less.

Opinions are what I'm seeking. Help me make this decision.

Thanks

If I may deconstruct the question of "should I trade for an M10-D" into the following parts:

1) Financial. I have no idea how much a used M60 set is worth. How much will you lose (or perhaps gain) if you trade it for an M10-D? Let's call this loss (or gain) $x.

2) Technology / features. So here we are essentially comparing (screen-less) M10 vs M240: slimmer body, higher ISO, bigger buffer, more magnified viewfinder, better image quality (?). Depends on your specific use case, do the technology / feature differences matter to you? See this thread.

3) Emotional. Are you emotionally attached to the M60? Does it bring you joy in addition to being just a well made, functional camera that takes pictures? Does its being a collectible item bring about some attachment to it, which can't be replaced with a mass production M10-D?

In conclusion, point 1 (financial aspect) is a fairly objective measure. Point 2 (features) is objective, but how much it matters depends on your use case. Point 3 (emotional) is entirely up to you. It's probably still tricky to balance the three; but hopefully breaking it down helps somewhat.

M10-D is the best camera that Leica has released ergonomically speaking (the shutter rewind lever really makes it as easy to use as a film Leica), the M60, ergonomically speaking, is one of the worst cameras Leica has released (can’t use strap without a case, fat / heavy given it’s an M240). As a user camera, there’s no doubt the M10-D is the best option here.

In terms of uniqueness though obviously the M60 is much rarer; almost no one owns this camera, so if the above doesn’t bother you when using the camera, then I’d say keep it.

No, but what I would do is not particularly relevant to your case :)

If I may, I will ask ONE question, the answer to which should resolve your decision making entirely.

Will trading cameras improve your photographic results, photographic enjoyment, workflow, enjoyment of ownership, financial situation, or any other quality of output or quality of life?

If you can't answer a resounding YES to this question than you don't need to trade.

If you can answer a resounding YES to this question then you still have a personal judgment decision based on factors this forum has no way to evaluate.

Personally, I think the M60 has a very high cool factor and even produces good results as a photographic tool in the bargain :)  If it were mine I'd keep it.

As has been mentioned it really all depends in what specifically you are asking from your camera.

I bought the common-as-muck version of the M60 - the M-D Typ-262 - and wouldn't swap it for any camera Leica has produced since; IMO nothing has even come close. For my needs it is pretty much the perfect '35mm' digital camera. I would never consider the M10-D because I really do not like several things about it so, for me, keeping the M60 would be a no-brainer. I also happen to use a wrist-strap very often instead of a neck-strap so even the lugless nature of the M60 isn't an issue.

The M10-D is a more sensible option in terms of IQ - if that matters?......

I have owned the m-d but swapped it for an m10-d in a moment of emotional weakness 😉
I really liked the m-d, but loved the idea of owning a brand new Leica.

After over one year of using the m10-d I have to admit that for me it is ergonomically even better than the m-d. I feel the difference of the slimmer body. And I really enjoy the thumbrest.
I do not care for the WiFi function. It doesn’t make it better or worse.
Battery life of the m-d was better. But the m10-d is definitely good enough in that respect.
the on off button was better on the m-d. Also I think I liked the iso button better on the old model.

i do like the new viewfinder a bit more and also it’s nice to have a bit more latitude regarding high iso. To me B&W looks better of the m10 sensors.
All in all I can say  I do enjoy the m10-d even more while taking pics. For me that’s all that matters in the end. So if you own the camera as a user and not a collector. I believe that the using aspect is all that matters. Hopefully this was helpful.

Just do it.

If not you would never know if the M10-D is/is not better user M than your now M60.

Maybe the trade-in low value would shock you, then just keep the M60 for longer waiting for "better day".

M60 is unique and I'd never trade mine unless the President personally orders me to do it.  (It could be your wife too.:)

A silly on/off switch on the M10-D and tardy FOTOS are distractions.  You can't have your cake and eat it too.  You better not even have an option to think about it.

M60 is solid metal and makes a unique shutter sound.  With all the Ms after M10-P going silent, you'll enjoy it as different.

M60 is the world's first screenless digital camera.  It's probably the only one lugless too.  I think it's unique and steelilux alone is worth more than M10-D now.

The fact that you parted with yours does not mean everyone should.:). M60 lens alone is now worth 2 M10-Ds. Even Leitz Park does not have it on display -- the M60 body there has a different lens mounted because they are all numbered, and for a prototype body they could not find the proper lens!

The broad rings on the steelilux make it extremely comfortable, the most comfortable M lens I tried.  Beats even LHSA APO 50 as the aperture ring is wider too.

The m10-d is a truly analog digital camera.

But the M60, has a wonderful lens that people would kill for, you will probably not see a second person in the street with it and most importantly if you were to sell it you would end up saying “i used to own one, i miss it”

The easiest and only option is to wait for the price of the m10-d to lower and own both! ;)
