End of the Firmware Road for the M10-D?

Now that it seems that Leica will be dropping the M10-D from it's line-up I guess that means that any further firmware development for the camera just will not happen which would be a great pity indeed. I've felt for a long time that the M10-D was Leica's "forgotten child" with no meaningful firmware upgrades at all since launch and all such requests and suggestions from "D" owners have fallen on Leica's deaf ears. I own and like the camera a lot whilst none-the-less disliking it's rear on/off/wifi switch and the camera's reliance on Fotos. I wish that Leica would have made the camera more autonomous with firmware upgrades but now have to accept the probable fact that no enhancements to it's operations will happen.

I am totally wedded to the Leica M marque/system but at the same time I do have trouble accepting that considering the comparative high cost of their cameras their after launch support and firmware development leaves a hell of a lot to be desired when compared to other camera manufacturers.

That's probably right.  Up to now it has run 10-P firmware releases as the only difference in function seems to be that the M10-D doesn't have the touch screen interface and the level indicator.  So the place to look for the missing functions that were promised in the instruction manual is upgrades to Fotos.  And that's asking a lot, as Fotos falls short on many other things.

I wouldn't be so sure.  Leica has released software updates for discontinued cameras in the past, for example for the M8, for the Digilux 2, and for the Digital-Modul-R from memory and there might be others.

They would have released a software update for the M3 but it wasn't needed in the end.

I think it is the same firmware as of the M10P

Yes I believe it does, but I was asking for specific M10-D firmware functions, like being able to turn off the GPS instead of having it always on everytime one mounts the 020 EVF so wasting battery life needlessly and to be able to have some other use for the thumb-wheel other than time/date setting, and so on. Other M10-D owners have different "asks" too but they've fallen on Leica's deaf ears so far.

I am still hoping for a fix regarding the slow startup time.

Apart from that I am getting the feeling that Leica is saying goodbye to the screenless digital in general. In my opinion that would be a pity. I would be interested in an upgrade like a m10-dr... has a nice ring to it 😉

Ability to turn off the GPS in the VF020 would be a desirable enhancement for any M10, not just the M10-D.  It is possible that they don't do it because it turns out to be a quite small power drain, compared to struggling with WiFi and Fotos.  I can easily blow through half a battery when I have to take several tries to connect and set the time.

Regarding firmware, Leica’s approach is

1: introduce camera and get bug reports from early adopters.

2: fix reported bugs with firmware update.

Repeat process when next model arrives.

Thank you very much Hannes,

Thats very much appreciated. All images shot with Leica M. Starting with the M9 through the M246 and now the M10-P.

Also checked your homepage and enjoyed your portfolio! Which lenses do you use?

I think people might read or hear 'discontinued' where it is actually a 'discounted' (reduced price).

I searched in the Leica announcements by date and read them, I loooked at that youtube video, I googled.  I looked on several countries Leica sites and and at BH and Adorama - none says M10-D is discontinued.  The only one that says 'discontinued' is Leica rumors.  I guess he or she did that misinterpretation of 'discounted' and then everybody else cited them.
