Do you use it with external VF or Visoflex?

Dennis, you're right, Nokton 21 is a very amusing lens because you can open up and have a very short DOF. That's great with such a ultra wide lens. Is very easy to use it with the VF but in low light the EVF comes handy for sure (even if the M240's EVF is not that big deal). I've used both but when using the EVF happened to me to check through the VF to be sure the subject I wanted was in focus. I love this bulky chum. But also the Ultron 21/1.8 was a terrific lens (both not very different from the 21 Summilux pictures I've seen).

I'm not seeing much love here for the 2.8/21 Elmarit M (pre asph version). This is a Mandler design and renders really nicely with digital Ms. It's also not expensive compared to other 21s.

This was taken on an M8

And another with the 2.8/21 Elmarit M, this time on an M-P 240 at 1250 ISO

The lens that brought me to the Leica dance 20 years ago. First lens I got 6-bit coded in 2007 (among the "freebies" Leica provided to M8 buyers).

I've never really seen any reason to replace it - a little extra corner sharpness at f/2.8 isn't worth giving up the Mandler color and tonality.

I do sometimes wish ELCAN had figured out how to keep the prototype's 49mm diameter, though. ;)

I really like it. 99% of my shots are from the 2.8/21 Elmarit M or my 35 'Lux pre-asph. I'd  guess that 70% of my work is done with the 2.8/21 and my natural 'view' on my Ms seems to be 21mm.

I've thought from time to time about finding another 21 mm but to be honest, I have no real need. I have wondered what the aspherical version of the lens might be like?

So do I, I got the 2.8/21 Elmarit M more than 30 years ago and still use it and do not see any disadvantages except a little but for me acceptable softness in the corners at 2.8f

It's a shame that it's such an undervalued lens. I bought mine (used, but mint) in London about 6 years ago for £650 ($950). Probably the best value lens I own.

I’m considering trading my 24 Elmar for the 21 SEM.
the 24 is truly outstanding, I’m just seeing the 21 as adding a new dynamic to my existing kit of 24 / 35 / 75.  While I understand 24 and 21are different I’m not sure there’s enough difference for ‘heavy’ usage.

if anyone can share 21 v 24 practicality I’d be very interested-

thx

The Voigtlander 21/1.8 Ultron is a very fun and practical lens. I reviewed it here. Doesn't get sharp corner-to-corner until about f/4 though.

The Voigtlander 21/3.5 Color-Skopar is also a very impressive and compact lens (review here). Its only real flaw is field curvature which can be problematic for landscapes.

The 21 SEM and Voigtlander 21/1.4 are king for corner-to-corner image quality, from what I've seen.

For strolling around the local countryside, the SEM. is ideal - here with M10M.

This Leica 21 2.8 is a wonderful lens. I used it for many years on my R3, R4 MOT and SL2. I wish I still had it - when your young and not loaded with cash - you make many trades.

Maybe mistaken of lens, OR120 ?

Leica M lenses can not be used on Leica SLR (as said R3/4/Leicaflex SL2)

can it be this SA 4/21 that you wish still having?

You're right! I'm thinking of my old 19mm Elmarit 2.8. Thank you for clearing my head. It's dusty up there.

My beloved and surprisingly good Color Skopar 21mm F4. As I opened this topic I shall give some additional feedback...
