I also do not trust google search results. I use mostly startpage. They also use the google algorithm but the results are being anonymised. Well, I heard that also Startpage is paying money to google to use their algorithm and so being tolerated by Google (until Startpage ill be one day big enough being assimilated by the "Google Borg" [ hello Trekkies 🙂 ] Hope that will nver become true!

But the results of startpage are more looking .-..-.-a kind of real. And one can open the result file anonymouse. Nice.

You still get what you pay for. Paid search always trumps organic search.

I don't get the usefulness of a distance scale in a camera with an EVF, especially the atrophied scales as implemented in digital viewfinders and on LCDs. But that may be just me.

I find the distance scales in EVFs on my Fuji cameras extremely useful for video. I can use them for reference points and “pull focus”, as well as estimate focus better while shooting. Once stopped down focus peaking ceases being useful for the most part.

I cannot say that I find the Leica CL/TL very useful for video beyond electronic notebook. Just one step up from a smartphone IMO. Don't get me wrong, this is an important feature for me, but things like focus pulling are beyond this level.

Fair enough. I don’t actually have a CL or TL but use the Q2 for video. I don’t miss the distance scale because you can at least rely on muscle memory when manually focusing with it.

As far as a potential future CL2 goes, I hope there is one. The only thing I would put on my wish list for it would be for it to use the same battery as the SL and Q2... I cannot abide adding yet another charger and battery type to my gear closet and/or bag!

Bonus points for Fuji XT-3 level autofocus and video features along with a Profoto TTL remote for Leica. With those features I could offload my Fuji system, but I’m not holding my breath!

Well, it is rather practical that the CL uses the same battery as a number of Panasonic cameras, and high-quality non-Leica ones at a reasonable price are available.

This is true and I agree, very practical. It isn't so much the cost of adding another battery type to my stable, but the logistics and management for day trips and especially travel that I selfishly want the CL2 to move to the Q2/SL battery.

I guess I already have something like 6 or 7 types of battery to manage. What's one more? ;)

I understand - you don't like it and therefore it is a terrible design!

Edit. I sold my TL2 because of its functionality, not its design. I replaced it with a Sigma fp which is a similar size, far more capable, but uglier and an interface similar to the latest Leicas but less touch-oriented.

Can you sum up Sigma fp experiences? How ti work with TL35 (or other TL lences) and have you tested it with M Lenses?

I use the fp almost entirely for video with M lenses: mainly the Summilux-M 35 FLE, or the Apo-Summicron-M 75 Asph. I have not used the TL35, as the angle of view is not quite enough (the Sigma can do full frame video). I use it on a tripod, with an external mic and SSD for recording. This is for recording the whole of drama and music productions from a whole-stage perspective. I use the SL for close-ups.. The fp battery is not enough for a long recording, but Sigma sells a mains power adapter for when you can find a power socket.

I was just getting into this setup when the lockdown happened and all the productions I had scheduled were cancelled, so my experience in making it all work together is limited!

As a still camera I find the absence of an EVF too much of a nuisance for normal use.

  • 4 weeks later...

On the LHSA call on Friday, May 15, 2020, Stefan Daniel commented that although the APS-C space is very competitive, Leica has no plans to discontinue their APS-C line of cameras. With that said, he didn't indicate that there would be any further development or a successor to the current Leica CL (i.e. he didn't indicate yes or no) but Leica is a bit secretive about this sort of stuff anyway. I would think that if Leica customers express enough interest, maybe? Stranger things have happened.

I recently purchased a CL starter bundle and am very pleased with it. I can use my SL 35 Summicron on it as a 50mm equivalent, and it is really no bigger than a TL 35mm F/1.4 Summilux. I also have a Sigma 45mm F/2.8 DG DN lens (68mm equivalent) and it is a great portrait lens on the CL

I really don't mind. My CL is good for another decade at least. I will have to match that... :(

LOL! My feelings exactly ... I look at my Olympus E-1, first delivered in October 2003, and it's still chugging along just fine. I hope I outlast that one!
