Have you considered using actual or improvised reflectors? I dislike obvious flash illumination and try to avoid it. Leica has a range of portable flash units if you need one. But I commend you consider natural alteratives wherever possible.

I am not using flash often, but I believe, it is always good to have one, not only for night, but also for harsh light like on the beach, etc...

I just purchased a used small and simple SF 24d that works perfectly well for me. But of course, the better ones are SF 40 and 60.

These flashes are made by a third party but tweaked by Leica to work with Leica cameras. Therefore, they won’t work with a Leica if they have not been tweaked for a leica and do not have the red dot, which makes them much more expensive than the original.

i hardly ever use flash. maybe one in 500 shots and only if no other option. but i need one in the bag just in case and the more compact the better. i got this one which is the size of a pack of cigarettes for my gh5 and although i haven't tested it yet, i suspect it might work fine on the cl and it's exactly the right size to match the cl body and hopefully will work on my s1 as well.

Guy, i don’t think it would work on a “Leica” ( made in Germany ), but I am not sure concerning gh5. Panasonic cameras have a different connection and may work with different Metz flashes.

it has worked on the panasonics i've tested it on, but it won't take much time to test it on the cl. i was hoping someone on the forum might have tried it. but i'll try it and report back when i have a chance. /guy

There are 2 types of flash for digital Leica.
The one for real Leica made in Germany : M ; S ; Q ; CL ; TL ; SL ; X
And the one for fake Leica aka Panasonic rebadge : C-Lux ; D-Lux ; V-Lux

They are not cross compatible !

I have used the SF-40 in manual mode in the CL with reasonable success. On the SL2 I’m using two SF-60 driven by the SF-C1, either in TTL or manual. Works very well, especially in manual mode.

if you want a very portable solution, you can look at LED. I have two Phottix m180, they work like a charm. Can do nice clamshell lighting with it. Or just hand hold one...

It won't. I have it and it is not compatible (except with Panaleicas). As it has no manual controls it is basically useless on the CL. Get a second-hand SF24D. I don't know about the S1. It might well use the Panasonic flash protocol.

oh well. at least i didn't buy it specifically for the cl. as far as flashes go, it's just what i like, compact and with few controls. mostly it gets used for fill flash in the harsh texas summer sun when i have to shoot during the day. tks! /guy

Not an economic purchase, but I did go with the SF60 for my CL, and picked up the radio remote trigger as there will be times I need it. Will most likely buy a second/backup unit, or for multiple lighting setups in the not-too-distant future.

Works seemlessly with the CL or my M262, once you dial the shutter beyond the maximum sync speed the flash jumps automatically into high speed-sync mode.

Haven't had many chance to shoot with it yet but worked well in HSS mode here at 1/250 sec and f4 with the 55-135mm f3.5-4.5 APO Vario-Elmar, using a Demb bounce attachment to soften the light. Auto ISO to 3200 (here the CL picked 800) works really well. The sensor is so good, ISO 3200 with flash to help defray the pull on the flash in HSS mode is a very logical trade-off.

Doesn't work on the CL. Its Leica clone SF26 works fine but is expensive and hard to find.

The SF 26 is far too expensive. It is small, but cheaply built and very limited in functionality. The built-in "video light" is a joke. Any smart phone has a better one.The stick-on diffusers don't even fit properly. A typical product from a failing company (Metz).
Strangely the SF40 which is actually a rather good and solidly built flash costs about the same, even if it is still overpriced compared to the Nissin counterpart.

My SF26 will live as long as my CL hopefully. Looks well build, works perfectly and is really useful in a small bag for me. Doesn't compete with bigger flashes like SF40 or SF60 i would not carry with me but the game is over for the SF26 since it is discontinued anyway.
