John Z. Goriup Posted September 24, 2020 Share #810 Posted September 24, 2020 I always have time for a sound, well-built & conceived classic American hot-rod. Not the chromed apparitions built for show and glitter with mirrors underneath to wow teeny boppers, but a thoughtfully engineered example to enable a 90 year old chassis to safely cope with many times the power, torque, speed and cornering than the designers of the original ever thought even possible. John Z. Goriup Posted September 24, 2020 Share #812 Posted September 24, 2020 A couple more of what I thought were exceptional 'street rods'. Clean, tasteful, tight & well done and mechanically sound. Owning, building and maintaining a car like that brings with it a great deal of satisfactions. M240-P / 35mm Summicron Asph. Lovely vehicles for sure. But, for me, without the mudguards they look like they're wearing short trousers. Pete.
jcraf Posted September 25, 2020 Share #815 Posted September 25, 2020 1948 Lagonda 2.6 litre drophead coupe. The new 2.6 litre car featured, unusually for the time, fully independent suspension and inboard rear brakes. The 2.6 litre engine was a DOHC straight six designed under a certain W O Bentley. (This particular car was the first example and the Lagonda demonstrator, and when David Brown bought Lagonda (shortly after buying Aston Martin in 1947), the car became his wife's vehicle). Given the timelines of their introduction, .......I wonder who copied whom. M24)-P / 35mm Summilux FLE JZG Welcome, dear visitor! Michael Hiles Posted September 30, 2020 Share #820 Posted September 30, 2020 (edited) Yesterday I briefly visited a car-obsessed neighbour. He has a variety of old cars (2 Desotos) in various states of repair or decrepitude. Including a lovely Rolls Royce Silver Dawn Coupe. Almost all Silver Dawns were bodied by Rolls Royce – the first standardized model with a body from the factory. However, a very few chases (3 according to my neighbour) were given to coach builders. My neighbour’s car is a coupe, likely by Pinin Farina. The car is just lovely, although it needs much work. I am passing this on only because I do not often run into a highly specialize and rare Rolls Royce. A Drop Head equivalent has sold $451,000 USD. The picture is from a Google search – a picture of my neighbours’ car was not possible due to space and no camera. I wonder what the wider story is - my neighbour is not in the $450,000 bracket.
