Derek Gardner's brilliant idea of how to solve the aerodynamic problem of the front wheels sticking out into the airstream when the FIA limited the width of the front wings to 1.5 meters for the '76 season. His  six-wheeld Tyrrel P34 design proved competitive right from the start, actually winning the Swedish Grand Prix ( driven by winner Jody Scheckter and 2nd place  Patrick Depailler ) utilizing 4 specially made 10" front wheels & tires, prompting the FIA to change the rules mandating only four wheels per car for the future, thus banning the car from competition.
