I'm impressed with the recent releases from Cosina. These 1.2 lenses seem great although personally I prefer the slower ones due to size and weight. Also, I don't think the latest 35 mm 1.4 II lens is getting enough attention. To my eye, it solves most of the issues I had with the first version, like focus shift and some barrel distorsion. It might not be perfect but it's good enough for me. It is also really compact and lightweight.

Agree! I've used both versions, and while the v II isn't perfect, it can give nice images, and has great build and handling. I wish they had used similar design for other new lenses, like the 35 f2.  I'd rather see more good, compact lenses than the super fast ones.

I know it's easy to DIY coding, I've read it everywhere.

What I'm saying is.... it cost consina $0.25 to create the 6 bit slots and why not?  Leave it no color and let the user decide how to code it or not to code it.  But it's a good option.

I am not so sure about those slots. I have a LTM to M adapter with slots, and it will not get recognized.

Never had any problems with Voigtländer or Zeiss.

Over saturated market and shift to Sony a7 series from Leica M.

It used to be mostly M based reviews of new RF lenses, then it shifted to A7 based reviews. At some point Cosina started to make new lenses for Sony mount and only after their release, with delay, M mount versions.

They corrected focus shift in 35 1.4 II, but one thing which holds me is nervous bokeh still remains, it seems.

1.2, 1.7 series seems to be better for it.:.

I like the erratic bokeh on the 35mm f/1.4 Nokton II.  It's a nice metaphor for my life.  :)

I believe the Leica patents on 6-bit coding are still valid, and they might cover the machining of the pits, not just the coding. I know 7Artisans stopped coding lenses, and I assume they were notified to stop.

the catch is Cosina did not code it, it's only 6 spaces - no color is not a code, or 7 spaces will break the patent.  users fill the color, get it?

moreover, did Leica patent the shape of the block space?  Cosina can make lines, how about 7 of them.  Cosina can patent this design as better heat expansion slots.  whatever!

I am another person who also interested in this. How did you do that?

Hmm. Is this necessary? I thought the old iPhone 4 pictures were good enough.

On the lens mount there is a sensor that reads the coding of the lens. You can easily see it as six red dots. Use a masking tape and transfer the position of the red dots to the tape with a pen.

Then mount the lens and transfer the pen markings over to a masking tape on the lens.

Transfer those markings to the groove in the lens with a black marker/pen. It does not have to be made like a dot. It is better to mark it as one continues mark like in the picture. Clockwise this is 011100. I made this in 2011.

Paint isn’t well recognized by the M10 reader.

It has been very easy to be recognized by my M10 and even with my M246!

Take a paint pen like Edding 780 or something else at <1mm and it will work.

vIII (9/7):

Hmmm, similar, but not identical.  Will be interested to see direct comparisons.

Similar? Really? They appear to bear little if any similarities at all.

Similar? Where? They look like totally different designs!

I used the version II and it’s a stunning lens...closed down. Wide open is just not great. I was really disappointed with it’s wide open performance, and stunned by the mid-aperture performance. Sold it because I couldn’t justify the size if I couldn’t use it wide open. I’m really looking forward to version III to see if it’s usable wide open, like the wonderful 50mm 1.2!
