Aktenschrank Posted February 9, 2020 Share #1 Posted February 9, 2020 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone, I´ve been looking for a good fit L-bracket for the SL2 lately and tried some options. I'd thought I´d share my findings with some pictures (below) to maybe help anyone out who's looking for an L-bracket for the SL2. The options I´ve tried are: Kirk ULB-1 3 Legged Thing Ellie Markins PV 100 & LV 170 For me personally I decided that the Markins is the best fit. It is also the lightest and generally has the smallest footprint thanks to the fact that it is possible to have the bracket part adjusted for a snug fit to the side of the camera. Obviously one cannot access any of the ports with the bracket mounted like that, but I don't usually need to. Obviously the Markins is also easily adjusted to extend the bracket part so that the ports are accessible. The Kirk comes in second for me, what I don't like about it on the SL2 is that the bottom main screw for the tripod socket is only adjustable "sideways" and the preset positions are not a good fit for the SL2´s tripod screw that is relatively far towards the back of the camera. Also the bracket part is not adjustable in distance to the body. However, with it mounted it is possible to still easily open the bottom port flap to access the USB-C port for example for charging. The 3 Legged Thing gave me a "gimmicky" impression. It felt a bit wobbly, probably because of the gap in the bracket part (that obviously also has advantages for cable management, I don't need this though). It also comes fairly close to the strap lugs and could cause issues when using a strap. Hope this helps anyone looking for an L-Bracket for their SL2. On a side note, I'm not a big fan of the RRS way of designing brackets for the SL range. They make an already large camera even larger and are also heavier than the other options. However, once they come out with their SL2 version I´ll probably have a second look... I also have some more pictures with different perspectives, let me know if you're interested (didn't want to clutter the thread too much)😀 Edited February 9, 2020 by Aktenschrank 3

rsmphoto Posted February 9, 2020 Share #5 Posted February 9, 2020 (edited) Thanks for this. very helpful. If you have them, please show how the end aligns for cable access. I'm curious to see how easy the access is for the SL2. Also, would the PV-80 work on the bottom of the SL2? Again, thank you. MarkinVan Posted February 9, 2020 Share #6 Posted February 9, 2020 Waiting for the RRS Sl2 Bracket. Have it pretty much permanently mounted my SL. In hindsight I could have sometimes removed the side bracket, but the base also worked really well for my hand strap which more than compensated for the little extra weight.

Yes, I think it would. According to the specs the maximum length provided by the PV 80 between the screw mount and the bracket is 56mm with the LV 170. According to my measurement 50mm would be required, so it should work. Keep in mind though that you then only have 5mm left for setting the bracket back from the side of the camera in case you need port access + the bracket for a while. I chose the LV 100 to have more flexibility here if required. Also the camera might tilt to the side when placed on a flat surface with the PV 80 (haven't tried this though...). I´ll post some more pictures shortly. One drawback I should have mentioned above is that with none of the brackets you can open the upper port flap without setting back the bracket. A much higher bracket would be required for that, which almost certainly would collide with the (ugly, still don't understand why) extending strap lugs. This can be clearly seen in the pictures below.

thighslapper Posted February 9, 2020 Share #11 Posted February 9, 2020 The indecently cheap ishoot is similar to the expensive Arca Swiss and is very well made. Both base plate and L part have lever locks enabling them to be moved in seconds so the ports on the left can be easily accessed. Far better than fiddling with Allen keys or loosening and moving the base plate
Aktenschrank Posted February 10, 2020 Author Share #12 Posted February 10, 2020 (edited) Thanks @thighslapper! I was looking at those options too, (mainly the Arca L-Bracket Classic) but decided against them because of the bulk & weight and the curved bracket (meaning no snug fit possible). Also only the base plate lever would be of any use, since the L part will be blocked by the stupid strap lugs before the upper port flap becomes accessible. As mentioned in the initial posting I rarely need to access the side ports (if at all), so for me snug fit was the priority. For anybody needing regular (quick) access to the ports the Arca would be great option for sure! johntobias Posted July 15, 2021 Share #13 Posted July 15, 2021 Anyone using the RRS SL2 baseplate??? any dealers in UK??
AZN Posted July 16, 2021 Share #14 Posted July 16, 2021 (edited) FWIW, for me, for my uses… A big advantage of the RRS bracket(s) is the inclusion of the QD socket. This lets me use (custom) wrist straps or a gun sling - much more secure than most other quick attach schemes I have tried. For example the Peak Designs tab-and-loop thing is hopelessly slow and fiddly IMO. As for the RRS SL2 baseplate – your best bet would probably be to buy it via BHPhoto: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1548216-REG/really_right_stuff_bsl2_ls_l_plate_set_for_leica.html … which is pretty much what I do for anything unusual as our Australian dealers are either in Lockdown or else never have stock. Hope this helps. BTW here's a link to the gun sling I got off eBay: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/203225141607 Edited July 16, 2021 by AZN
Photoworks Posted July 16, 2021 Share #15 Posted July 16, 2021 the RRS bracket is the best for me. I added to every camera I have, and it permanently live on it. main reason is that I have big hands and the last finger always drops under the body to support the grip. With the RRS bracket my pinky rests well on it and no more hand pain. other plus is that it has not hard edges around and has a good hold.

I'd always imported my RRS plates directly from them, but I'm not sure RRS are shipping anymore to the UK based on the comments here (Orders, Shipping, & Returns (reallyrightstuff.com)). I did own the RRS SL2 base plate, but sold it on commission via a UK dealer (given I moved over to a GFX100S). As per Michael's comments, Photospecialist is apparently one option for RRS' new stuff in Europe. In terms of the used market, apart from mine, I haven't seen too many SL2 plates from RRS, but one can see plates for older cameras like the M240 come up more frequently. I've found all the RRS plates that I've owned (M240, Sigma DP, M7, Mamiya 7, SL2) to be absolutely first class in terms of design, fit and finish. johntobias Posted July 19, 2021 Share #18 Posted July 19, 2021 OK, RRS have suspended all shipments to UK due to Brexit...they are 'Hoping' to have a uk distributer soon...nevertheless, Knowing their quality and the fact they fit the rather odd FLM heads and QR arca brackets I use, I bit the bullet and ordered from Photospecialist in Germany ....job done !
