Hey guys I recently got my SL2, as I remember the SL had ultrasonic sensor cleaning when turning on. I am just wondering if the SL2 has the same thing since it appears to be no mention on the manual at all. The original SL manual mentioned ultrasonic cleaning. Thanks!

Neither SL nor SL2 have ultrasonic sensor cleaning.

[Edit: this is incorrect, SL has ultrasonic cleaning, see post #22 in this thread]

Correct. The main issue, I believe, is whether wet-cleaning of an IBIS sensor is advisable. I have cleaned the SL-sensor many times, without problems and concerns. What to do with the SL2 sensor is not that clear for me:

I cleaned the sensor of my sony cameras (with ibis) very often and didn't have any problems. But I never asked me the question if that is advisable. So thank you for having me thinking.

Cleaning the SL-I Sensor was very easy as the sensor is fixed. There was no problem  with wet cleaning or using the Pentax Sensor Cleaning Kit (german Video Youtube). With the Sl-II i do have some more problems. First of all i got MORE dirt to the sensor than with the SL-I. The second  point is the mechanical bearing of the Leica sensor. I am really afraid of damaging it as the sensor is not the same fixed as for example the shake reduction sensor of the Pentax K1 .

Right at the moment i don´t have a good answer how to clean it in a safe way....

I agree that the SL2 sensor is catching more dust more easily than what I experienced until now with SL.

I blowed air on it several times and wet cleaned very carefully and very gently the sensor once, since I got my SL2 3 weeks ago...

I used Green Clean « wet and dry sensor cleaner » and had no issue, with no more precaution than being very smooth in my action.

and are you changing lenses frequently ?

Can you keep the shutter closed AND open without using electricity? In the SL 2 when in use the shutter is open. It makes sense in terms of battery life to use no power on the shutter to do this. Can a shutter also be held shut without power drain?

I think the most sensible thing they can do on the next firmware upgrade , is to get that shutter to close when the camera is off.

that would really help keep the sensor cleaner ( just like they do with the M cameras )

I would want the camera turned off when sensor cleaning, or a menu setting which opens the shutter and turns off the IBIS.

In my experience it doesn’t work very well anyway ....... you can activate sensor cleaning on the S1R and it appears to achieve precisely zero.

That might mean that they tried to do it with the IBIS mechanism, which is tuned for human scale motions, not ultrasonics.  My understanding is that ultrasonic cleaning takes another layer of glass, and Leica would probably not want to do that.

From the beginning, resilience and robustness were at the focus of the Leica SL’s development. Body components machined from solid aluminium and precisely engineered seals around controls and in the lenses provide optimum protection against dust, moisture and splashes for the sensitive technology inside. At the same time, integrated ultrasonic sensor cleaning removes dust and dirt from the sensor.
