I notice with AFc enabled (w/ Pre-Focus turned off), when half-depress the shutter release to select AFc, the resolution in the EVF and LCD drop dramatically and the the image is noticeably aliased. This is most noticeable in the EVF as its magnified, but it occurs in both displays. In high frequency scenes the moire is excessive in the EVF. Once I release the shutter the resolution increases.

This is with the EVF in full screen, not utilizing the focus aid zoom options.

Can anyone replicate this behavior?

I would not consider the issue I am experiencing as normal

in my case, the image is degraded so much it’s impossible to tell if it’s in focus. For that matter, I would consider the EVF unusable in these situations. Which leads me to believe my camera has an issue, otherwise there would be widespread reports of this problem.

I cannot judge the amount of degradation on your camera. The significance of the issue may also depend on your eyesight. It is probably best to check with Leica.

On my S1R, the EVF flickers slightly while I am in AF-C. I do not tend to stay long in AF-C, so the problem is not that significant to me. On SL/SL2 and in AF-C mode, you can press the joystick to do AF-L, which should increase the EVF quality so that you can judge the focus.

Do you have other FF mirrorless cameras where there is no such issue?

It is normal at least For SL2. Panasonic claim they have 480fps in focus mode. No way EVF can refresh like like without drop pixel.
This has to do with CDAF which require constantly pumping to optimize focusing based on feedback.

Just checked as AFc is not something I use much. Same here with the lens I have mounted...75 Summicron-SL. It's quite noticeable. ALmost a stuttering effect with the focus as well, particularly with high frequency scenes as you noted. Seems to get better here with stronger lighting, farther distances. Of course it's dark here, so testing with indoor house lighting.

This is more annoying behavior than what I experience with the S1R, which I've tested more thoroughly. I don't recall it being particularly annoying with the SL.

To clarify, Panasonic lens and camera communicate at 480 fps. The EVF is refreshed at 120 or 60 fps.

You are right, I was wrong and thinking too much.
Basically, sensor has to refresh 480 cycle per Sec during AFC, not full sensor pixel but AF pixel cross full  frame. This add heavy computational load to camera that reduced EVF pixel feed to degrade viewing experience. Id guess.

FYI... a friend of mine has been having the exact same issue. He sent an Email to Leica, and got this response back.
