tom0511 Posted January 4, 2020 Share #262 Posted January 4, 2020 vor 19 Minuten schrieb insideline: The truth is for us that own both systems we already knew that the XCD 80 1.9 is a superior lens to the Leica SL 1.4 or SL 50 APO when combined with the larger sensor on the X1D along with the more accurate colors when striving for the ultimate in image quality. Then when comparing lens quality there is the ongoing problem with most of our Leica SL APO lens manual focus problem, which on my two lenses virtually eliminates their ability to be used in manual mode whereas my XCD lenses all have been flawless. Again, both truly "amazing" systems but each has their strengths, X1D/XCD for ultimate image quality and long exposures, SL2/SL APO also for great image quality and for speed and versatility along with the flexibility to use M and R lenses. Is it any more complicated than this, for me it isn't. Well, I think the question is how big is the IQ difference, and is it always in favor of the x1d. I am also owning both systems but find myself using the x1d less and less. I also believe that the larger sensor still has something special for IQ. However I find the super-duper-color of the x1d to be a little overhyped.
helged Posted January 4, 2020 Share #263 Posted January 4, 2020 (edited) Thanks folks (@tom0511, @insideline, @Jeff S; regarding the problem with manual focus). Not a problem on the SL75 that I have, but I understand others have issues. Edited January 4, 2020 by helged
jplomley Posted January 4, 2020 Share #264 Posted January 4, 2020 Examined a 35mm APO SL manufactured mid-December today at my dealer, and the focus was buttery smooth with no imperfections noted anywhere on the lens.
Jeff S Posted January 4, 2020 Share #265 Posted January 4, 2020 My stiff-focusing SL75 was recently shipped to me directly from Leica. If I buy another prime, I will inspect at a dealer first. My two SL zooms (the longer ones) were buttery smooth, so I figured there would be no concerns with the Summicron. Fortunately a friend who bought his squeaking 75 from a nearby dealer was able to exchange his for another copy. Jeff
tom0511 Posted January 5, 2020 Share #266 Posted January 5, 2020 Seems sample variation. I am confident Leica will take care of it.

tom0511 Posted January 5, 2020 Share #269 Posted January 5, 2020 guys, I tell you something: some days ago I shared some portrait I took with a forum member who also uses MF cameras. We agreed that the portraits show how good FF has become when the right lens is used. In this case we believed to see how exceptional the new 50mm Summicron SL is. We agreed near medium format quality. Some days later I realized the images were taken with the Pana 24-105 and not the Summicron. What I am trying to say - I am sure either the 80/1.9 with some purple fringing or the SL 50mm with a slightly "weaker" sensor...so minor differences. The overall "look" and character of the image seems more important than minor weaknesses in certain areas. Plus the user interface and how it works for us. Thats at least how I see it. 5
meerec Posted January 5, 2020 Share #270 Posted January 5, 2020 Differences are minor indeed. Sorry for going off the main topic of cameras compared being X1D and SL2, I recently went for fun through an experiment comparing H5D + HC 50 II lens and CL + Summilux M 35 FLE lens: blind comparison of identical subject shot with the same single Profoto light. On screen, you cannot see the difference. CL is a minor 24mp APS-C sensor and H5D is 50mp MF sensor (the same sensor as in X1D). So there you go ...
Chaemono Posted January 5, 2020 Share #271 Posted January 5, 2020 The CL with the 35 Summilux-TL vs. the X1D II with the XCD 80/1.9 is my next project. They are both uber-sharp corner to corner with about the same amount of purple fringing.

Jeff S Posted January 5, 2020 Share #274 Posted January 5, 2020 Sure, we each make choices, have different experiences and preferences, and often reach different conclusions. Just curious, do you print and frame your best test photos? Jeff

Jeff I actually never printed and framed a test shot but may do so with one of the α7R IV pushed shadows shots that I posted in the ‘Leica SL2 dynamic range’ thread. 😂 Edited January 5, 2020 by Chaemono
Alistairm Posted January 5, 2020 Share #276 Posted January 5, 2020 I’m currently on holidays and brought the SL2, having always chosen the X1D over the SL. I’m thoroughly enjoying it. IBIS is wonderful, as are the zoom lenses. If the XCD zoom had arrived before I left the decision may have been harder, but I’m glad it didn’t because the SL2 hasn’t missed a beat and I’m enjoying the speed it lets me operate at. IQ wise the X1D still has the edge. And the X1D ergonomics are wonderful (except the stinky rubber used on the grip), but the SL2 ergonomics are a nice step up on the SL1 when you’re using the camera all day every day for a couple of weeks.
sebas_ Posted January 5, 2020 Share #277 Posted January 5, 2020 Nice to hear, that you all enjoy the SL2. I’m still waiting on the arrival of my preordered unit. The 75 already waiting besides me. The 35 is already preordered. Have sold my X1D before the mark II was announced a year ago and have shifted to the GFX50R, but a year later I don’t enjoy the Fujifilm as much as I had the X1D, albeit it shortcomings. This forum feels a little bit of a personal representation about the thinking processes moving “down” to 35mm again. But after all, I am really looking forward to the SL2, as it seems it can be a really great companion, which you are enjoying working with. Something which I have lost a little bit with the GFX system. Probably just personal preferences.
Chaemono Posted January 5, 2020 Share #278 Posted January 5, 2020 Let’s not kid ourselves, if “one shoots landscapes, on a tripod, and does it in gorgeous light, the X1D will produce amazing files with fantastic colors that need little tweaking.” For the rest, IBIS and the SL Summicrons make the IQ advantage of that ‘MF’ sensor less obvious. sebas_ Posted January 5, 2020 Share #280 Posted January 5, 2020 (edited) Think so too. Have had a chance to test the SL2 before ordering and I was relieved how a joy it was to operate. As I’m using TSE lenses as well for my job, it’s another point towards the SL2 as I’m not like relying one the E shutter. And as a Capture One user, I can edit the SL2 files there as well. I just hope that the SL2 will arrive soon 😊 Edited January 5, 2020 by sebas_
