Pham Minh Son Posted August 5, 2007 Share #81 Posted August 5, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Re prices: My point was that you're comparing leica's retail price with its most expensive lens to a grey market or other price for the Mamiya with a standard lens. An M8 with a 28 2.8 would be about $3000 less, and a Mamiya at list would be thousands more. Stephen, I agree that my Noctilux is one of the more expensive lens to get from the Leica M system but I also get it in used condition. My Mamiya body is also in used condition as well. Depending on lenses you like to use the price differences in $3000 or so would not surprise me. However, both the M8 and the ZD back are new and from a USA dealer no grey market. I also welcome and will help other folks who are interested in the ZD back for the price I quoated from a USA control dealer.
Advertisement Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Hi Pham Minh Son, Take a look here Price increase M8 and WATE. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest tummydoc Posted August 6, 2007 Share #82 Posted August 6, 2007 Historically, sales of each new Leica item has been brisk to the point of frenzied in the beginning, with a swift market saturation and equally swift falloff in sales following suit. Several years ago Leica raised prices $1000 (40%) in the USA on MP and M7 to $3500. Sales were hardly affected--but only because they were already almost nonexistent. Those products had settled into a snail's pace demand. If the same is now true of the M8, then a price increase disproportionate to any currency fluctuation won't seriously impact sales. If there is indeed still significant demand for the M8, a rumoured price increase of that magnitude in October might be aimed at knocking fence-sitters off their perch, so as to augment Leica's profit statement for this quarter, whilst long-term it would simply hasten the point of market saturation but not seriously impact total eventual sales. luigi bertolotti Posted August 7, 2007 Share #83 Posted August 7, 2007 I am happy to have bought y M8... now a little happier... but this price move is something strange... maybe related to sales channel... maybe now that (seems) demand/supply is rather stabilized, they start to play the list price/street price game... Mr. Lee surely has experience on this... a frequent game in high tech. Or maybe the impressive number of posts about the Summarits have convinced them to try to keep in the same range the total price of M8 + 1 or 2 lenses... it will be interesting to have global detailed figures on how, in the mean, an M8 set is sold when Summarits will be available... but think they won't make them public. And I had not at all the idea to own a WATE... now less than ever... surely this is a different move from the M8 pricing... they did the same with Noctilux... as other have said - low volumes products - small impact on bottom line... simply a "really you want IT ? pay a lot so we too are happy"
ho_co Posted August 8, 2007 Share #84 Posted August 8, 2007 Has there been any confirmation of this price increase aside from the Leica bei Meister newsletter? Mark Norton said above that the LbM website doesn't mention the price increase. I checked with an acquaintance at Leica NJ who was also unaware of a pending increase. Of course, not finding a confirmation isn't the same as proving the newsletter erroneous. I'm also a bit bothered by the frilly text and color variations in Bart's citation from the newsletter. Is LbM's newsletter usually so loudly formatted? Their site seems much less over-the-top, more informational and less sensational. --HC

pelikan1931 Posted August 8, 2007 Share #87 Posted August 8, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) strange but true, even in this day of age. Leica: my point of view.
Fotomiguel Posted August 8, 2007 Share #88 Posted August 8, 2007 If all this it's true, could be possible, that Leica is going to introduce in the next months a 16 mm lens and for the next year the M9? This would be the way to sell their stocks. Thank you!
guidomo Posted August 8, 2007 Share #89 Posted August 8, 2007 It might, as I said above, be a hoax... Maybe not: Leica Camera AG - Advance notification (Sorry, don't shoot the messenger!)
Eoin Posted August 8, 2007 Share #90 Posted August 8, 2007 Now that is an official statement, only problem is it looks like the €600 increase has turned into €1470 (£1,000Stg) of an increase:eek: The only thing this has done is told me I don't need the 2nd body I was thinking about, I'll now plod along and consider the next M Digital if and when it arrives. You can still get it at the old price until October;)
Knorp Posted August 8, 2007 Author Share #92 Posted August 8, 2007 Maybe not:Leica Camera AG - Advance notification (Sorry, don't shoot the messenger!) Holy smoke that's even more [£1000] then the € 600 increase in LBM's news letter. Now let's see, how do you rob a bank ?
luigi bertolotti Posted August 8, 2007 Share #93 Posted August 8, 2007 Maybe not:Leica Camera AG - Advance notification (Sorry, don't shoot the messenger!) "This advance notification is given to enable M enthusiasts, who have yet to purchase an M8, a chance to purchase prior to the increase". This sentence is not a nice one: for me, personally, I dislike this approach to customers : if they want to increase the price, better for them to add nothing to the announcement, or to give general explanations like "costs" "investiments" and so... said in these terms, smells too much of inventory management, optimization of production schedules and so... issues that a company is better to manage inside: let the consumers draw their own conclusions without splatting in their faces they are stupid if they wait. guidomo Posted August 8, 2007 Share #94 Posted August 8, 2007 I seriously hope this does not mean they are in desparate need of some quick cash to survive. If they are doing badly financially this may save them for a few weeks but won't be sustainable. If, however, their market analysis says that the demand justifies this price tag then why not? Knorp Posted August 8, 2007 Author Share #95 Posted August 8, 2007 Maybe not:Leica Camera AG - Advance notification (Sorry, don't shoot the messenger!) Is this 'news' only on the UK website ? There is still nothing on the German website.
luigi bertolotti Posted August 8, 2007 Share #96 Posted August 8, 2007 Is this 'news' only on the UK website ?There is still nothing on the German website. Nothing in the Italian site too... but Italy is managed by a distributor, not a Leica branch like UK... surely different approach to price sensitive communications. marknorton Posted August 8, 2007 Share #97 Posted August 8, 2007 Yes, it's only on the UK web-site so far. Leica UK are being uncharacteristically quick off the mark. Maybe it's Leica UK who are fighting for survival and are busy "finessing" their pricing to increase revenue. More like a sledgehammer and I will not be there to throw them a life-line. Eoin Posted August 8, 2007 Share #98 Posted August 8, 2007 You can still get it at the old price until October Don't tempt me , seriously though, I paid €3600 for my M8 on my way through Schiphol airport last November, the current street price today here in Ireland is €4540. Add the price increase and your coming very close to €6000 street price for a body. I think I'd have to take another trip via Schiphol and before October to beat the autumn price blues. marknorton Posted August 8, 2007 Share #99 Posted August 8, 2007 And you'd get there to find they were sold out...

Mmmm, that price increase difference puzzles me, it's more then a few bucks. The WATE's increase is huge but the M8's is mind blowing. BTW Mark- did you read my PM ?
