How to upload images: Prepare the image as follows: 1.   The image should be sRGB and 8-bits 2.   Reduce the size to 2480 pixels on the longest side. (smaller sizes can be set, but are not recommended) 3.   Sharpen properly for screen. 4.   Save as JPG to your desktop, reducing JPG quality to produce 2000 kB (5000 kB for sponsoring members). 5.   In Lightroom these parameters should be set in the Export dialog. 6.   In the Forum posting or editing box, click “choose Fil

Exposure time was 5 min+ with 6 Stop Lee Little Stopper. Thank goodness for quality tripods! 

As I was heading out early this morning I was hoping for broken clouds and a delicate sunrise, but horizon was completely socket in. I was about to head back, but then decided to turn those lemons into some sort of lemonade, with this more narrowly focused/moody composition.

Waiting for this composition to process felt like an eternity (10+ minutes with noise reduction)

The Guards and police are all friendly and relaxed.  It’s safe, but a sad state of affairs the day before the inauguration.

Although there are very few people out and about, curiously there are more un-masked people around.  Possibly people from MD or VA who managed to get through using one of the two or three approaches still available. 

[Fence on the left is just enclosing the remodeling work at the Folger Shakespeare Library]

Orchids in backlight mode. All with SL 2 and 24/90 at high ISOs - mainly 6400. In postprocessing denoise software applied, but this was not an absolute  must.

Black Rhino -the most endangered large African mammal. They’re very aggressive & short-tempered.    

SL2 & VE 90-280mm L

Up until the early 1980s there were approximately 100, 000 Black Rhino across Africa. By the late 1990s the remaining population in the wild was below 2, 500 animals, with +97% of the population having been wiped out due to poaching. 

Rhinos are being killed for their horn which is used in traditional Chinese medicine as a potion to "treat" a variety of ailments ranging from impotence to cancer -this is all bullshit of course. Rhino Horn is made up of keratin the same material as our fingernails & has as many medicinal benefits as eating one’s fingernails.
 
To counter this poaching onslaught we have implemented a number of hard-core conservation initiatives & strategies. These include de-horning (see my previous posts & images on this: Saving A Species From Extinction - Part two), to relocating Rhino from national & state parks i.e. areas where they’re more vulnerable to poaching, to private reserves & more remote & less accessible areas. 
 
This male is one of a group of 20 Black Rhinos that we relocated back in 2006.  We’re currently involved in an initiative to relocate a further 100 Black Rhinos to more remote locations in order to ensure their protection & survival. These efforts are slowly paying off & populations in the wild have increased to approx. 5, 000 animals. 
 
Paradoxically, Covid has helped to curb poaching due to restrictions on people’s movements & heightened border security.
