New to the camera and trying to figure things out.  It was a dreary day but this kinda caught my eye.  This is the jpg with a small amount of cropping and no other processing.

1/50 f/5.6 ISO 160.

Two quick questions for the forum.  The uncropped jpeg is 11.4 MB.   From what I can tell I am recording L-JPG.  I was expecting the file size to be bigger even for the JPG.  Is this correct?

Also when I used adobe elements to compress the file for posting I got the angular ripples that is not present in the larger file.  How do I avoid adding this artifact?

thanks

No ideas.  It just quit.  As the camera is so new, accessories like a charger are in short supply, so a replacement battery charger could not be arranged on mY travel aboard a cruise ship. So the camera was and still is a brick until I get warranty service stateside. To say I’m disappointed is oversimplifying matters.i just completed the trip of a lifetime visiting 5 countries without a camera.  :(

I completely feel your grief.  Last summer I went on a two week road trip through what had previously been Yugoslavia.  It was the first time I went on such a trip with only one camera (a reliable brand) and one lens.  After two days I had a issue with the shutter and the camera froze up.  The manufacturer said it was a known issue and they would fix it per their warranty.  But the technicians in Budapest were helping cover a F1 race and would be out for a week.  They said they would lend me similar camera free of charge.  But all their stock was lent out due to the F1 race.  So I carried around my expensive fragile brick for 12 days and got to know my iPhone real well.  They did fix one I got back to the US but I missed a lot of opportunities due to the phone limitations.

The artifacts are likely the result of the exported file being 8-bit. My guess. I highly recommend you shoot the largest file possible and truthfully DNG. You’ll end up with nicer photos in the long run after post processing. If you’re trying to minimize or not do post processing other than maybe a crop, then jpeg’s will work. I do not know what size files to expect. I never shoot jpeg’s. Welcome to the forum.

Like Leica Guy I never shoot jpeg but always DNG. However, this may assist (from page 54 of the downloadable English manual):

Greetings,

JPG is already a (lossy) compressed format. The size of the jpg file will depend on the quantity of information, and the compression rate ('quality') you've selected. To have a proper control on all of these parameters, and much more, it is usually advised to use the RAW format at shooting stage, do your post processing (like cropping and adjusting light, contrast, etc...), and then export the result to a jpg file meeting your requirements and according to what you intend to do with the said file. Looking at it on a smartphone will not require the same "quality" than looking at it on a large screen.

If you have a new Q2, it should come with 3 months free of charge for Adobe CC, which includes the 2 instances of Lightroom. You might want to give it a try...

Have fun !

I am really learning a lot from this group.  Thank you.

I have been shooting L-JPG, the least compressed of the JPG option and generally uncropped 28 mm.  I think my error is equating a 47 Megapixel image with a 47 megabyte JPG image file.  In fact because of the way the JPG is compressed and based on the color and image distribution of the initial image, the JPG file is in fact much smaller than 47 mb.  In fact it seem to take up only 20-25% of the size.  This is the advantage of the compression.  And like you have pointed out, also the disadvantage because 80% of the information is lost before I start any editing.

I did just order an update of photoshop elements 2020 up from the 8.0 which I have been using.  I am waiting to play with that, but I may also give Lightroom turn.

I think that Leica Guy is correct about my artifact.  It is not in my original or cropped JPG no matter how much I zoom in.  It is only present when I squeezed the 11 mb JPG to under 500 kb.  I will see if the artifact exist if I do the compression with the modern version of Elements.

I will also play a bit with RAW files and see if my computer is able to keep up with the memory required.

Love your pics Snoopy.  I noticed that when I click on them, they open in your Flickr account.  Can you tell me how you link them to Flickr? I just started on Flickr but can't seem to figure out how to link my pics on this forum to Flickr.
