Seems like we're discussing about two different Leica macro adapters here.
• The 14409 macro adapter with goggles is supposed to be used in RF mode with the Macro-Elmar-M 90/4 only. See:

• The 14652 macro adapter sans goggles needs live view for focusing. It has its own 6-bit code (111001) associated to the 90mm focal length by default. Can be used in theory with any lens not hitting the subject matter but preferably with a collapsible 50mm or longer FL. Here at about 10cm subject distance with an Elmar-M 50/2.8 partially collapsed on a digital CL (handheld).

Yes, but nonetheless I've used the 14409 loads of times with the Thambar-M (focussed via live view). It works absolutely fine. I've no idea about other lenses on it.

I have used the 14409 adapter with an Elmar-M 50/2.8 on my M8.2 but the lens could not be focused with the rangefinder then. As for using the 14409 in LV mode i have no experience with this as i prefer the 14652 adapter for that.

That's great, I'm delighted for you. I'm just reporting that, irrespective of whether the 14409 is "supposed to be used in RF mode with the Macro-Elmar only" or not, it in actual fact also works fine in non-RF mode with (at least some) other M lenses.

I'm not techie enough for that but i would not advise to use such an adapter with lenses it was not designed for.

I think you have to use your own judgement on a lens by lens basis. The 14409 is basically just an extension tube with what might be called a cam extension designed to engage with the cam of the 90 Macro Elmar-M. The 14409 is tuned to the specific cam of the 90 MEM but there's no reason why using it with lenses that have a different shaped cam is going to result in any damage (to either lens or adapter). Clearly, if there's any resistance when turning the lens it's a bad idea but if the lens rotates freely no harm is being done. Obviously, the RF in the camera is not going to be accurate if a lens other than the MEM is mounted on the 14409.

I now have both adapters and the 14652 is the one I will go to first in many cases (and certainly if I'm using a lens which is not the 90 MEM). If I'm using film, then naturally the 14409 is the adapter I use, but I also still use the 14409 and 90 MEM with digital because using the goggled RF is considerably quicker than the EVF.

Indeed but how do you manage to focus other lenses with film or digital cameras sans LV if i may ask? Just curious.

Other than having a film rf, that's pretty much my experience and what Ithink too. I said the 14409 is cumbersome, because I like to change lenses often. It' s a bit easier to just put on and off the 14652 - to me; others might not agree. I stll can get away just with with lv, but no doubt the evf  makes focusing easier and more accurate. In the end my point is that with the 14652, one can get close-up shots and even macro without having to buy a specialized lens like the elmar 90 M....not.a one trick pony lens mind you. If you have a 50,75 or even other type of 90mm,then 14562 adapter is a cheaper and easier tool in my view.

  • 5 months later...

I just picked up a Leica Macro Adapter M # 14652 and it didn't come with instructions. I checked the downloads are of the Leica website and can't find anything there.

Any help would be appreciated.

In the meantime, with a 50mm or 90mm Summicron, what is the correct procedure?

1.) Set the lens at its closest focusing distance and just move the camera closer/further from the subject?

2.) When do I adjust the helicoid? to fine-tune focus?

3.) do I ever need to adjust the actual focus ring on the lens?

BTW..I do have a Visoflex 020 EVF

Thanks!

Quickly said, you can play freely with all the 3 variables : distance camera/subject - focus of the lens - focus of the adapter , depending on what is easier in the context of how you are working : with tripod is better of course to operate on helicoids, freehand is very comfortable to fine adjust your (and your camera) position.

Changing the position has more effect on the dimensions of the frame taken (the "FOV" - Field Of View) but in most macro shootings it's not so important (it's important in reproductions, where you have to frame a precise X x Y mm area)
