Am I certified crazy for considering the M-A?

It is for what you use it! If you do not use it, it is just a boring status symbol in your glas cabinet, but if you use it, you will love it for sure. I use the analog Ms for portrait shootings and for sure it is such a joy that you will not miss any digital camera.Don't wait, buy one! I was waiting for almost 8 months to get a M-A, but maybe I had a bad karma, they did not produce it and waited for more orders. So at the end, I did not want to wait any longer and bought a black M4 (also a beauty), but the M-A is still not completely forgotten in my brain.

Hello everyone,

I've been a long time lurker on these forums, mostly on the digital side. However, my interest in film has recently been re-awakened following the purchase of an Olympus OM4Ti from eBay (a camera I had as a teenager and loved). Anyway, since then I've been lurking in the film forum here and this discussion has prompted me to pull the trigger on an M-A, which arrives on Thursday. Can't wait! So I'd add my encouragement to White Buffalo to go ahead. It's really not a rational purchase if you consider the immediate outlay, but it certainly is if you consider how long the camera is likely to last and how much pleasure it will provide.

I've never used the TriX roll which came with M-A.

Must be kind of collector now, expired for some years now I bet.

what is the expire date of your TriX packed with your new M-A ?

There’ll be a big maritime and steam event next week. I’ll be taking the M6 with Elmar-M 50 or Summilux50 asph for the steam engines, WWII vehicles, etc.-the film should suit the subjects,I hope; I haven’t used It before, the M9 with the Super-Elmar 18 and CL with 18-56 and 55-155. Should be fun.

of course i don't expect to use the m-a for studio stuff like the bottom two shots, but i'm wondering if i could shoot similar stuff like the rest of the images on the m-a. it's a mix of 28 and 85mm lenses, but i'm not married to the focal lengths and happily shoot others as well. with the m-a i'm planning to get either the 35 or 50 summicron- currently leaning more towards 35. i'm open to other first lens suggestions as well. thanks.

As a collector, I own about 40 vintage Leicas, mainly LTMs, and I love the fact that they are used, old and have someone else's imprint on them. In the M range I have the M3 (DS and SS), M2, M4, M4-2, M4-P, M4 , M6 and M7. My favourite to use is the M3 DS (see my avatar), followed by the M2 (for 35mm) and the M6 (for meter). As for the M-A, it does not interest me, but if its layout and manufacturer's guarantee tick your boxes, then you should go ahead. You will not regret using a wholly manual Leica rangefinder.

Digital M is not analog M and far from other digital cameras.

Some years that I use digital M, and each time I take film M, some old habits come but not all, even now I forget to advance the film after each picture taken like old film days,

but when Leicavit is attached, this "advance" is never forgotten, strange, muscle memories ?

Net result, when I happen to take at same time film M and digital, the digital M is hardly in service.

So now, I tend not to take for same event the two types of M.

I can appreciate someone wanting something that's had a previous life, with who knows whose imprint on it, but personally like the idea of leaving my mark on it and taking it on a lifelong  journey with me fresh out of the box. I deal in vintage and rare guitars as well and the part about not knowing their previous history always bugged me. Sure, it might be a romantic thing to some, pondering who could have owned it prior to you, where all it'd been, the songs that were written on it (or images taken on it), but I'm more pragmatic about it after being scorned several times and am much more concerned about unoriginal or broken parts. I'm sure I'll own a vintage Leica at some point as well.

I don't understand why you mention digital M? I'm not interested in any digital Leica. 

The Leicavit seems like an attractive add-on I will be certain to purchase.

I don't think this is a relevant distinction. Everything has its place, I really don't think that dogmatism makes us a better photographer. I think that we basically agree.

This whole Post is THE ongoing question - No One actually needs a Leica Camera to take pictures, the Camera is an Attainment".. once owned and coupled with a Leica Lens the beauty of the package becomes clear.. Rolex or Timex, they both tell you when it's noon.. Audi or Nissan, they both get you from A-B.  Canon Sureshot or Leica, they will Both record the event.. Differences in Quality agreed, longevity accepted, initial outlay vastly different - So, apart from just wanting to own The Red Dot, what is the reason for your original Post?   L
