Peter, consider that sometimes it is mainly the pure lack of light which let you take the Noctilux, especially when people are moving.

Nevertheless, not every time using this outstanding lens is due to the "fashion" of getting a narrow DoF.

Besides that, especially pictures made with the old Nocti have a very special look. I never would change it for a new, a "cleaner" one.

@haloThe one advantage that the Noctilux f/0.95 has is that it is better at capturing available light. So have the Nocti binoculars which someone once tried to sell me on the basis of seeing birds in the late evening. As every normal bird is roosting before sunset I found that asset a little far-fetched, to use typical English understatement.

If the birds have gone to sleep what is the point of looking for them in the dark? OK I might spot a nightjar. Around here, in rural Sussex, nightjars are as rare as rocking horse droppings. In daylight I have a 77mm Televid Spotting scope bought in 2001 which will outlast me. Sometimes the marketing people have to learn that practicality outweighs their dreams.

Noctilux f1 at 1.0. Something strange happened with the previous post. Same picture.

And yet you seem to care about others’ use of a lens you don’t like.  There is so much other photography on this forum (some very good), but you chose to follow threads discussing a lens and photographs which don’t impress you ...

Thanks. That’s exactly my point, @Peter Kilmister. No reason to get insulting.

Pico gaiend a place on my ignore list.

You got it totally wrong. It’s not a one trick pony. Stop it down to f/2.8 and it’s as if the sensor has more DR all of a sudden. It’s amazing.

Oh, SMAL sent me a private message which he must have intended to be a blistering, aggressive, insulting post. It was mildly amusing. It is clear that his native language is not English, which is fine, but he might want to brush-up on English vulgarity and train his speller. Regardless it was clearly just a moment. All is well.

That's very magnanimous of you, PIco, which is to your credit.  It's a shame that a member feels the need to behave in this way if that's what he intended.

Pete.

I can help him with vulgarity.

I was a Chief in the Navy. I am familiar with the words and can use them in a sentence.

I am very pleased to have come across this topic.

I’m an artist and it’s really nice to see a concentration of photographs where the photographer directs the gaze in the same way an artist would consider and paint or draw a picture.

When I decides to capture the  focus of what I find more visually interesting to record as a sketch reminder, I don’t think there is a better lens for doing so and that is why I am delighted to own a nocti. When I use a wide Dof on that or other lenses I own I find the ‘mechanical eye’  more often interferes with the natural characteristic of the human eye and just produces a poor  representation of what I am seeing. However I am not a good photographer and just using my camera and lenses as a sketchbook.

Yes, but with the ‘nocti’ even stopped down a bit the mechanical eye still works in a way that pleases the human eye. I’d say the human eye has a DOF of f/2 to f/2.8. And the ‘nocti’ is outstanding in that range.

What a visual - a salty Navy Profane Spelling Bee!
"M....F..." Could you use that in a sentence please?
