Hopefully compatible with the SL90-280, but with a small margin based on the protruding elements of the converters. Looking forward to the "Super Telephoto Lens" in 2020!

If Panasonic IS announcing the teleconverters next week, whether or not they fit Leica L lenses, the minimum take away is that they are keeping to their announced road map. Meaning, very likely 3 more lenses this year.  But to me as well, the most interesting will be the super telephoto.

Thanks for sharing this. I am about to press the button on a  Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM (great value/quality lens to use in the interim) with a Canon 1.4 xTC & Sigma MC-21 adapter . I have a client safari coming up in 2 weeks, we're mainly focusing on birds. On my last trip to Botswana, as expected, I found the Leica 90-280mm just too short for birds.

I share Helged's hope that the  Panasonic teleconverter will fit the Leica SL90-280.....

Best,

Mike

The more I look at these the more I oscillate between optimism and pessimism......

On the optimistic side the 90-280 looks as if it mates perfectly with the teleconverters.....

..... then I wonder why Leica has not produced anything similar given they have had 4+ years and it's hardly an overwhelming optical challenge ....

..... and then I delude myself into thinking maybe this was the plan all along ..... with Panasonic producing something fairly universal that fits all L alliance lenses....

... and then I wonder why Panasonic would make adapters compatible with Leica lenses when Sigma have decided the opposite ...... and it doesn't make a lot of economic sense if Panasonic intend to produce telephotos in the near future when Leica show zero on their roadmap ....

I remain optimistic but won't he surprised if I'm disappointed ....

Have Sigma decided the opposite? They have decided to not support existing Leica cameras, not future ones with one EF adaptor.

not entirely ..... but it does seem to be a lack of commitment to full L Alliance system inter-compatibility ...... of course it may just have been a design/firmware oversight that they chose not to bother with after the event.

It will be so disappointing if these don’t work with the SL 90-280.  I really thought this ‘alliance’ was based on interoperability. If not, what is the point?  Will have think about moving away from it if it doesn’t get better soon.

Quite agree. Leica falls short on the long end - in all their systems. However, looking at vintage, I am convinced that the Vario-Elmar 105-280 R with converters will give better quality than the Canon albeit slightly shorter and Manual Focus.

And they certainly won't fit ojn APS-C. I think that the short register distance will make it next to impossible to construct non-protruding extenders of any quality

Thanks Jaap. I have both the Leica APO-Telyt R f4 280mm and the Leica 105-280mm R plus my old Carl Zeiss Apo T 300m f2.8 behemoth. They're all too cumbersome and heavy, I'm also quite a bit older from when I bought these lenses 20 or so years ago....

I picked up the Canon 400mm f5.6 L plus Canon MK3 1.4 x Tele Converter and the Sigma MC-21 adaptor this afternoon. The Canon lens weighs all of 1.2kg!

Using my cats as models, the initial results are very pleasing.

Some info worth noting:   The Sigma MC-21 EF converter on the S1R is impressive  -single point auto focus works really well & even with the Canon 1.4 xTC there’s no noticeable lag in auto focus.  Full EXIF info is also transmitted. This combination will work until Leica comes up with a Tele Converter....

Best,

Mike

I hear you, Mike ;)  I scaled down to M4/3 for bulk and weight reasons. The absolute technical quality, although pretty good, may not quite match Leica’s full frame offerings but for me that is more than offset by the shots I would never have gotten with more cumbersome gear. I only wish for a stabilized long lens for the CL That would make my photographic world Nirvana.

I still do not know what the problem really is with the MC-21. The adapter works with SL with firmware 3.4 in a limited way (no AF). But in firmware 3.5 it refuses work completely, only sending an error warning. I do not like this “improvement”.  If I could I would pressurize them (Leica, Sigma ?) into supporting it at least in a minimalistic way.

My guess (only that) is that the problem is at Leica's end. Sigma had originally announced full compatibility and then posted an apology on their website. That sounds as if they had intended it to work. And why not? they primarily sell lenses.
