Hello Leica-users,

I just bought second-hand a vario T 18-56 and a vario T 55-135 lens for the CL and Sl.  The firmware on the camera’s is up-to-date. So how to update the lenses firmware?  Please help.

Thanks in advance,

Klassika.

I know that on the SL, when the lens is mounted on the camera, if a FW update is available, you should be able to update the FW on the lens once the camera update hadscompleted.

Now that I think of it, I don't think that I updated the FW on any of my TL lenses, and I have four.

Thank you very much Jaap. As always you got it right. It worked!  I bought a while ago the CL street kit with the 23.2 lens, and now these 2   lenses came in at my dealer, so I puchased them for a reasonable price. They are very sharp lenses. Thanks again for the help.

Greeting from Klassika in the deep south of The Netherlands.

The camerta will update the lens automatically if needed, as soon as it is mounted and the camera switched on.

I own a CL as well as a handful or TL lenses.  The firmware on the camera body was up-to-date when I bought it (v4.1). I recently picked up a refurbished TL2, and updated the firmware from v1.4 to the latest v1.5. As soon as I mounted my TL lenses, the TL2 updated the firmware on each of them (perhaps not the 18mm, I wasn't really paying attention). This is strange to me because I don't understand why the CL never updated the lenses - does this make any sense to you? The same lens firmware update (to enable linear manual focus) is listed on both the CL and TL2 pages, so it's not a TL2-unique feature. The other thing I don't understand is why is the lens firmware available for download at all, if it is apparently embedded in the camera's firmware?

EDIT: Actually, now I'm even more confused. My TL2 automatically updated my 23mm Summicron from v1.0 to v1.1, but I was able to update the firmware (on the CL) from v1.1 to v2.0 by manually triggering the update process. The 18mm (being the newest lens, I think) had no updates available from v1.0.  Gonna try the others now.

The TL lenses are in the L alliance but Panasonic and Sigma don’t update automatically

I don't think anyone mentioned Panasonic or Sigma in this thread...my point was that the CL does NOT automatically update TL lenses.

Mine did.

If it doesn't there is probably no need (like a change that is only valid for TL2) CL and TL2 have different firmwares even if the lenses work equally and interchangeably well on either camera,  Leica will only initiate an automatic update if there is a need to do so for a specific camera. In general it makes no sense to update for update’s sake. That goes for all electronic gear.

I guess - but the latest firmware is available to download on both the CL and TL sites.  Supposedly it adds linear manual focus to the lenses, although I don't see any release notes nor can I find a press release discussing the update. And if neither the TL2 nor the CL can take advantage of the v2.0 update, that leaves only the SL-series bodies, which seem unlikely benefactors for a TL-series lens firmware update.

Well if any one could tell me how to update Sigma lenses FW, I'd be interested. I just ordered a 35mm f/1.2 and a 85 f/1.4 for L mount with the usb hub. But I have no idea on how to proceed.

This is for 35mm f/1.2:

https://www.sigma-global.com/en/lenses/a019_35_12/?tab=support&local=firmware

Copy the downloaded .plf to SD card, and start lens update in the camera. Make sure that you have the latest camera firmware

There is no 'Lens update' or anything about lens firmware on leica tl. Also no any content about lens firmware on Instructions of TL2. Tried the same method as updating camera firmware and no use.

Hi Pierre

Do you successfully update firmware of Sigma lens on Leica T/TL/TL2? I encountered lens incompatibility issue on Sigma 70 Art Macro with Leica TL, AF work abnormally.

A Leica camera will not update a Sigma lens. My 70 Macro works flawlessly on both TL. And CL straight out of the box.

Thanks for useful info. Leica supports lens firmware update on SL series. (I know that because we can search for the lens firmware update instructions on Google.) However, on TL, I cannot find such instructions. So it seems I can only use lens with newest firmware (like Lumix S lens or Sigma I series) or borrow a Lumix S camera or Sigma fp to finish the firmware update of 70 Macro.
