James6714 Posted January 2, 2024 Share #67 Posted January 2, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Recently purchased this “Rigid” lens, in very good condition, 1963 production year. The first few pictures I took with this lens on M10 body, it really amazed me. The rendering is very “clear” or “sharp”, don’t know how to describe it. I do have 50 APO as well, but some how I like the Rigid more. Now I use it on the M9M, see the attached photo. Welcome, dear visitor! skahde Posted January 2, 2024 Share #68 Posted January 2, 2024 Am 15.10.2018 um 20:13 schrieb gyoung: I've had one for 30 years, wonderful lens, the sharpest 50mm I have ever used at large apertures, across the frame. Better than 2 nikon 50/1.8s, and a a 1.4 ais, better than an Olympus 50 1.4, and a Pentax 55/2, 1.8, and 50/1.7. To complete the sidenote about alternatives i think those are several close misses according to my own experience. From the lenses I owned those with the most similar rendering to a Summicron were the Olympus Zuko 1.8/50 mm "Made in Japan" (engraved on front) and notabely the Nikkor 2/50 mm. The latter I own in AI and also had one in an older scalloped helicoid and it shows many of the virtues one can find in this thread, beautiful rendering and sharpness. The AI is one of the few lenses I never considered selling and also had it overhauled at one point which cost more than the lens itself (50 €) but was well worth it. Shots taken with it are hanging on my wall right besides others taken with a Summicron v4. My Nikkor 1.8 Ais pancake (never had one with the longer mount to compare), always was a decent and sharp performer but nothing which would put the icing on the cake by its own characteristics, sometimes even to the contrary. So if you are looking for similar rendering in F-mount my recommendation is the Nikkor 2/50 mm AI.
Anthony MD Posted July 25, 2024 Share #69 Posted July 25, 2024 On 10/13/2018 at 12:13 PM, adan said: Yes, this was Leica's first serious response to the challenge from Japan (Canon and Nikon) - the previous collapsible requiring compromises (although not bad), And began the replacement of "ported" screw-mount lens designs with lenses designed specifically for the M. At least in 50mm - the 35 Summaron f/2.8 and 28 f/5.6 preceded it. Very good (one might even say amazingly good, for 1957) resolution and micro-contrast (acutance), while retaining a softer macro-contrast (tonal range). A combination I like. I used one briefly when the M10 came out - the DR version with close-focus attachment for studio work. Didn't keep it - but may have to reconsider. Welcome, dear visitor! Sebastian S Posted July 25, 2024 Share #70 Posted July 25, 2024 Made this with the DR on Ilford FP4 in Firenze. What i really love about this lens is the timeless rendering (others would say vintage) - you can compare scenes from our time with known imagery from the golden era of street photography without having completely different image styles. If you have a photo from let's say the 50s and one from today both with the same look and feel, you can focus at things that really changed. Sometimes it's a lot, something nothing at all.
