Welcome Paxson,

(1) "SOMKY+UOORF: must be used with the lens head of SOMNI (unscrewed from the mount) and only the near range is usable "

this is correct if you want to use your M-P with rangefinder only from 90cm to 48cm

(2) OUFRO: can be used with the lens itself (no need to be unscrewed) ...

this setting needs the use of Liveview or EVF for framing/focussing, you have the same behavior with your Sony, only close-up use, short range

Hi:

Your use of SOMNI really helps and I would like to confirm the following setting before buying an used M/M-P (typ 240). I am new to the Leica system and I am using a Sony A7m3 with several M lenses right now.

(1) SOMKY+UOORF: must be used with the lens head of SOMNI (unscrewed from the mount) and only the near range is usable

(2) OUFRO: can be used with the lens itself (no need to be unscrewed). But I guess that the focus range would be changed. Is that correct?

I know that M10 is compatible with SOMNI but it costs twice than an used M/M-P. So it is really a tough choice for me.

Paxson

Yes, that's all right… but of course it's a different matter on focusing : with SMKY+UOORF you use RF, with OUFRO+lens you must use Liveview or (better) EVF : with M240 you can have both the ways,, even if EVF is not so appealing (but I decided wasn't Worth the cost of switching to M10... B))

Thank you two for your comments. Now I understand why a.noctilux posted an article that M10 is the 1st M which can use SOMNI in full range. It’s a pity that I can not use SOMNI on M-P in the normal range (only 4-5m as a.noctilux mentioned in the previous post) because I really love its rendering. 🙁

Paxson, for your M-P, if you don't have SOMNI , the RIGID 50mm Summicron has the same optical property and as is Rigid can be used to infinity to 1m, with every M included digital ones.

The Rigid 50 Summicron is best choice (even for me as "Summicron aIl time Lover" I use also other digital Ms) for digital use:

only difference is the infinity lock but the focus ring is larger than DR.

Rigid optical cell + Somky Uoorf for 1m to 48cm as I stated can be used with every M, RF focussing.

Have a look here link to Wiki Summicron 5cm

Actually, I already have a DR so I want to use it on the M-P if possible. If I can use it in the range from 1m to 4-5m, maybe it’s the best I can do before getting another Summicron (I have a Summitar 50 f/2, Konica Hexanon 50 f/2, and 7 Artisan 50 f/1.1 as my 50mm lenses).

You can use your DR with M-P to 10m, then it's blocked by the cell baffle (bottom of M) to go further to infinity.

To see where,  just unscrew the optical head and look inside the DR mount.

Hi A.Noctilux:

I really appreciate your answer about my DR question, I searched over the web and found several articles (including Luigi and yours) about using SOMNI on M bodies. Your answers do help me more than the sum of these information. Now I fully understand what I can get by using SOMNI on a M-P. I can afford a M10-P but since I am new to the M system so the best bet should be buying a M-P rather than jumping into M10-P directly. BTW, I love the look of MP, M-P, and M10-P so I want to buy a professional look one.

I love using manual lens so I started my photography from a Nikon D200 with Nikon manual lenses then stopped it for several years. I always want to have a M for its usability and also a recommendation from one of my best friends who is a Leica lover and expert. I love his photos taken by M and its lovely lenses. Last year, I bought a Sony A7m3 and several used M-mount lenses (yes, I bought only M-mount for my future M system). Now, I want to have a M for real this year and start with a more cost effective combination (I am not sure whether I am comfortable in using a rangefinder).

Again, thank you for your prompt reply and valuable answers. It did help a new guy likes me who want to use M but has little knowledge about it. It's my first time to be here and found that Leica Forum is really a wonderful place to ask questions, learn knowledge, see beautiful photos of Leica M. I hope that I can have my first M body soon, maybe about this June/July by using my mid-year bonus. :)

In the past I used the Oufro pretty often on an M240 - have to use LV to focus which can be difficult.  After some tests, I've settled on 50 Summi V4, then cropping and up-rezing in Photoshop to 800ppi.  Very happy with the results even when printed to 17x22" - and more so, not having to use the heavy, noisy Canon Mark III , tho I must say their 50 2.5 Macro is an admirable lens with pleasing bokah

I just bought one last weekend and am just getting re-acquainted. My last one was the DR which I had in the early 90's. Never should have sold it.

I had the Opportunity to play with a Rigid Summicron with my Leica CL. Results are very pleasing !

I really like its color rendition, combined with good sharpness

M10M + Summicron V2 this Morning. No real post processing.

I like the sharpness combined with quite low Contrast
