Anyone use summicron 50mm dual range on leica sl? Can i use near focus range on it? And what about infinity focus, will any problem on leica SL? Thank you

I don't use SL but I can not imagine that this lens can NOT be used on SL.

Just use it happily on any camera (on digital M since M10 related in this thread M10- Somni ...).

Remember that to reach close range, we must push forward the focus ring before turning from 1m to 0.90m - 0.48m.

...AND have the close-range goggles attached (even though one won't be using them for viewing or focusing).

To press down on the little "ball bearing" interlock button on the top of the lens mount.

https://www.kenrockwell.com/leica/50mm-f2-dr.htm

Otherwise the focus ring cannot be rotated into the close range.

You just need to press the time to turn a little to unlock the focus from 0.88m. Once it is unlocked you don't need to press anymore to turn the ring.

edit: At least on the dual scale (feet and meter) version, never tried the single scale version.

This Somni (DR Summicron) is something unique in design and craftmanship.

Even the weight (304g / 357g with close range adapter) can be explained by the wise design and feeling of solidity and durability.

The Summicron 50mm 'II' so-called Rigid (251g) has infinity lock, but not on DR, I don't know why.

Anyway, they share the same nice optical cell.

😍

For sake of experiences, I did swap the optical cells (Rigid/DR) with success, not recommended by Leitz, so the lens body has serial number to match the optics.

Don't forget to have a look in this thread for more on this nice lens

Many thanks for your kind words. Looks like we're all enjoying the Pre-A 50mm and Rigid as well.

Dominique,

With DR when mounting on digital Leica M, take care to put the lens on 1.5m to 2m setting, so not to destroy something in the chamber of camera.

DR Summicron would work on M240 only to about 4 - 5 m not to use for long distance .

I use with pleasure my Summicron DR (SOMNI) on M10, first digital Leica that accept it (well not every copy of DR though) ...

the M10 + DR use related here early 2017

Since then I use Rigid Summicron when I plan not to use under 1m or SOMNI when I plan to use with the optical adapter for near range.

Maybe the best is using SOMKY when needed with the optical head of Rigid

or why not put the OUFRO on it (or 50mm of one's choice) with LV/EVF use on M240 or M10.

Ps. On New M11 with metering on sensor, there is no conflicts anymore to mount dual range on camera. Works perfectly with or without googles 👍 cheers Per

The 50mm Rigid is one of my favorite lenses and is a no-brainer for anyone who shoots 50mm. Plus you can get a clean one for under $1k, which is crazy in the Leica world. It doesn’t have the crazy light control of modern lenses so you can get really beautiful flare effects if that’s a style you are after.

Everyone these days argues about the “resolving power of old lenses” on these modern bodies and I always think of this lens. I can aggressively crop with this lens and I really like the results even though its 60+ years old. Cost aside, if I had to choose between a 50 APO and a Rigid as my only 50mm, I may choose the rigid. LOL. Maybe that’s crazy.

I so want a Rigid Summicron 50mm V2. But I live in the wrong country to find one. I would take a V2 over a V5 any day.

Half the time ebay sellers won't even ship here. The other half its too high risk to send things here due to the extremely high cost of sending it back.

Love this rigid Summicron.
Found a mint one in the UK that was manufactured in 1957, my year of birth.
Send it to van Maanen in the Netherlands for a CLA and now its my favourite glass.
I am using it on a M8 and a M10-R.
It’s difficult to find this lens in mint version!

I've owned this 1966 vintage Rigid since 1982.
Still works nicely on my M10.
