Anyone have the titanium version if this lens?  How does it render?

The place I bought mine (see post #807) had a titanium at the same time which I asked about and looked at. It renders exactly the same as any other v2; there's no constructional nor optical difference at all - fancy finish apart. It's the same lens for twice the asking price.

I thought it was made of brass rather than aluminium.

Also, some would have you believe that the 'glow' characteristics differ in the titanium version, as well as those of the various early versions (steel rim, infinity lock), perhaps due to different coatings,  though it seems that much of this could be due to a certain mythology surrounding the lens.

I was only replying about the construction design and optical design as regards rendering - which is what was being asked. In those respects being brass- or aluminium-bodied makes no difference.

I’ve had the Steel Rim, the Infinity lock (currently own), the regular Canada version, and the titanium version. I can say for sure that they are all (slightly) different.

The Titanium without a doubt is the sharpest / flares less / has less glow. It’s also the heaviest since it’s made of brass. That can be positive or negative depending on what you want.

To me nothing beats the Steel Rim and the Infinity Lock, and this is actually the main lens I wish Leica would remake at some stage.

That being said, the regular V2 is very similar and the differences are not too significant that I’d say to go for X instead of Y. As long as you find a good deal, I’m sure you can enjoy any of the versions : ) They are all great!

I have the titanium version and I like the heft. Compared to the 40mm summicron-C (my closest equivalent) I find it just a little sharper at f2, with higher contrast. Unfortunately mine back focuses at 2 metres and beyond, something I'm thinking of having fixed.

That's all very interesting re: the titanium version.  I've been thinking about picking one up since seem pretty available.  Something with less glow wide open than my 1972 version, but with still some interesting characteristics.

OK. Fine. How about this?...

All 35mm Summiluxes made between 1967 and 1995 shared exactly the same optical design but when the titanium versions were being produced the workers in Wetzlar removed those particular glass elements from the production line and sprinkled them with Magic Pixie Dust before those leneses were finally finished.

Is everyone happy now? Carry on.
