Hello Everybody,

I think that all "goggled" 35mm lenses which were made so that 35mm lenses could be used with the M3 range/viewfinder: Whether Summilux, Summicron or Summaron: Focus to 65cm/25.5 in. It is the M2 versions (No goggles.) that focus to 70cm/28in.

Best Regards,

Michael

Sometimes it surprises me how good this lens can be wide open.

Hi Guys.  Excited to take delivery of a Pre-ASPH v2 next week , however its' coming without a hood.

Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere (I've just searched this thread and couldn't find mention), but wondering what options there are (if any at all) to get a filter on without using the original hood and VII filter.

I just wondered if anyone had seen anything inventive and effective, or whether purchasing the 2 part hood (presumably 12504 ?) and dropping filters in.

Generally I prefer to run with no hood at all, so if there's anything inventive anybody has seen regarding attaching a filter (I suspect not though) then I'm all ears.

Aside from that I generally prefer square hoods, if that's workable on this lens.    Side note is that I didn't realise how expensive the original hoods are - but happy to grab one if its the only and/or best solution.

If the 12504 is the way to go then do I need to buy a filter holder to go in it (as well as VII filter), or does the hood itself act as the holder.

Edit: I've since found this thread , which answers some questions but not all:

Thanks in advance for those that know any more
Best, Graham

Graham 👍.

Special lens, one of the rare Leitz/Leica lens without front filter thread.

The hood for this lens is 12504 which can be unscrewed to insert Serie VII filter inside (some more available E49 filters can be used also, sometimes in reversed position).

I use alternative(s) for filter and hood as old user of this Summilux 35mm.

a - as said E49 filter inside the 12504 hood

b - tinkered 12524 square hood with cut out for seeing through and a bit of filing to avoid vignetting at four corners,

c - sometimes Kodak Serie VI adapter to A42 (front lens diameter 42mm) snap-on as short hood with no filter or to use drop-in "VI" filters that I happen to own

Anyway have fun ...

Hi Arnaud.  Thanks for this :D

I might start with the 12504 then .  Will I need a 'filter holder' or is the hood itself the 'holder'.   I didn't know a holder existed however when I started to search VII filters I saw a couple of 'holder' parts come up in the search results, so thought I better ask .

Looking forward to getting out with the lens.    Considering it's a special lens with no filter thread I was happy to pay more for it (I did the same for my screen-less camera)... I am embracing the Leica-way :P

Thanks again mate for all the tips !

12504 hood IS the Serie VII filter holder.

Way of clever design from Leitz :

unscrew the front part, insert Serie VII filter, then screw the front part to retain the filter.

have a look here in Wiki

I would look for a Chinese copy in the first place. I have one, it is nice and works fine. Just search for "leica 12504" on e**y.

Very quick test run wide-open with newly-delivered 35mm 1.4 Pre-ASPH v2 @ MD-262.  I think I'm really going to enjoy this lens .  Didn't really experience any particularly unruly flaring on the test run.  Overall definitely fits the look I was hoping to get when acquiring this lens

Planning to do some pretty rudimentary side by sides with my Summicron v4 later to compare performance if anyone's interested I can share . Will be a very DIY approach I'm definitely not a lens tester. Mainly I'm interested to see sharpness and contrast of my own copies stopped down past F2 etc

Congrats with your new lens! A comparison of these two lenses is something that people often ask for and will surely be appreciated. I've had both myself (twice), but never at the same time, so I couldn't do any direct comparison.

Hey everyone, for anyone interested I've posted some (pretty basic) observations about my Summilux 35mm 1.4 (V2) and Summicron (V4) side-by-side here.

Unsurprisingly very different until 2.8 but how long does that last  ? :)

Summicron IS a better lens under 1m and if filter is required.

Summilux IS a better lens at f/1.4 if we 'understand' how to use 'famous Leica glow'.

These things are pretty obvious (for those who know these lenses). But the test tries to uncover some of the less obvious differences.

Of course, why I use the two 35mm in different periods,

each can not replace the other.

As you wrote knowing the lenses is the key, so testing is fine but taking pictures of real world would be productive (or not ! ).

🤥

As I learn over time, even same 35mm Summilux-M type but different lens can behave quite differently, have a look at Steven many threads.
