For the Challenge 12noon meeting, recommendation is the Washington Square Diner. Stefan I will be a pumpkin all of Saturday until 8:15pm. I can then get myself together and come out and meet you guys at the restaurant for a drink. I'm happy to just pull up a chair and squeeze in. So no need to reserve me a seat (unless you want to use it for your camera bags 😂 Regarding the competition, since I am limited to Sunday and also since it is the very festive Cinco de Mayo, I would ask for the entire day Sunday to choose my two-hour window. Things don't really get started until noon'ish with the parade (which I believe runs down 5th avenue) etc. Would this be ok? I would be using an M-A, portra 400 and either a 28 or 50 (depending on the whether and my mood)

So from 1200 noon on Saturday until sunset Saturday, and then from sunrise Sunday to sunset Sunday? Edited April 12, 2019 by DigitalHeMan

I would encourage folks to shoot their iPhones and Saturday and save their roll of film for Sunday for Cinco De Mayo. Anyone want to roll with "Team Miller," just let me know... So from 1200 noon on Saturday until sunset Saturday, and then from sunrise Sunday to sunset Sunday? You have a point here*, according to the current One Challenge rules (Andy's), it would be possible to take the One Challenge picture during the night. In practice, I see a limitation due to the pre-declared sensititvity. That means, I have to decide already at noon to take my picture at night. My personal take would be to leave this option open (which has never been used in the past) in case someone joins, who is a dedicated specialist in night shots. My feeling: so be it. But I'm open to add a further point to the rules, in case this is an issue for some of the participants. Stefan * I almost wrote "This is an interesting question", which in German would mean I truly find this to be an interesting detail**, while in, well, English English the meaning is a different one. ** I would have found studying law boring after school, but having been involved in NDA discussions, I start to enjoy to think through "what happens when" scenarios, so start to find it interesting - in the German sense. Maybe I sneak in a lecture room after retirement.

farnz Posted April 13, 2019 Share #169 Posted April 13, 2019 For those who have travelled to New York since the invention of the mobile phone ("Yes, Children, there was a time when mummy and daddy didn't have instant access to FB and Snapchat.") I'm considering acquiring a Travel SIM card for my iPhone largely for less expensive data and keeping in touch with Challengers etc. Is this a) advised, b) necessary, or c) just plain nuts and an unnecessary expense because a strong 4G signal and free WiFi are available everywhere in NYC? I'm not sure that's really in the spirit of the event. The challenge is on Saturday, and whilst I appreciate we are making an exception so that you can shoot on the Sunday, I hope most people will be shooting their challenge shots on the Saturday (and of course going along to cinco de mayo the next day to enjoy it for what it is...)
andybarton Posted April 13, 2019 Share #171 Posted April 13, 2019 I have no skin in the games this year, but the whole point about the Challenge was that people did it together on the Saturday afternoon. That means that everyone has the same opportunity and, erm, challenge. The same weather conditions, things going on in town etc. Picking and choosing when to participate is definitely not in the spirit of the event. That said, having read Stefan’s rules, the shooting period now extends over two days, so anyone can shoot on either day.

A miller Posted April 14, 2019 Share #174 Posted April 14, 2019 (edited) It is impossible for me to participate on Saturday because i observe the Jewish Sabbath. I had thought the rules allowed for the two hour window to occur on Sunday. Perhaps i misread them. I’d love to be with everyone on Saturday during the day. But sadly i simply can’t If accomodating my personal situation will be a problem for any single participant, I will happily refrain from participation altogether. Indeed, we would be happy to have you joining on Saturday evening whenever it is possible, I haven't seen a restaurant refusing a latecomer yet. Also, please feel free to have your two hour window for the competition on Sunday. Looking forward to see you all in less than three weeks Stefan
lanetomlane Posted April 14, 2019 Share #177 Posted April 14, 2019 We leave tomorrow, Monday. Thought we'd play it safe because delays aren't unknown on United Airlines😨😩 I assume someone has my mobile number, or we'll be using the usual WhatsAp group. So would appreciate if someone posts the final arrangements for lunch and dinner. Also, assume there'll be the usual "practise" sessions on Thursday and Friday evenings which we wouldn't mind getting involved in. Wish everyone safe travels and looking forward to catching up in NYC. Cheers, Tom 1

Pete. Pete, I just bought a Travelsim from this mob. https://travelsim.com/ There are a number of companies with apparently the same name !!??!! I thought I was buying from an Australian company but it turns out to be an Estonian company. Strangely, the data pack from Estonia will work in the US and Hong Kong (my other destyination) but the Australian one wont. Seredipitous I guess. The Estonian one lasts for 18 months whereas the Oz one expires after 6 months. OTOH, you may not need data pack. I have jumped for it in case I want to use maps a lot. A gamble. Do some due diligence. Comms between the group I assume will be via WhatsApp, as in the past. Any other intel is welcome fro anyone.
andybarton Posted April 14, 2019 Share #180 Posted April 14, 2019 Depending on which phone provider you have in the UK, the data roaming packs for the US are pretty good value and a lot less hassle than finding a SIM only deal that works with your phone (which must be unlocked, of course) EE: https://ee.co.uk/help/add-ons-benefits-and-plans/call-or-going-abroad/roaming-costs/countries/usa O2: https://www.o2.co.uk/international/internationalhub Vodafone: http://www.vodafone.co.uk/cs/groups/public/documents/webcontent/vfcon079683.pdf With EE, if you have a "Max" plan, data roaming there is free. Ditto if you have one of Vodafone's Entertainment plans.
