Leica M10-P coming soon?

I do not know too much about the model policy of Leica with its M’s. But under the condition that the M-P has an screen on its back that is even a tough screen plus new shutter plus some other details/improvements . . .

 

Is this then not just the successor of the M10?

 

Who goes to buy the M10 from now on? Yes, there are akways customers who like to save some money with older models that are still good products. In analogy there are still people buying an EOS 5D Mk III instead of the Mark IV. Thats fine but its just the old model.

 

And this happens after a bit more than 1.5 years after the launch of the M10? Does that make sense other than just boosting sales?

Surely the P versions are mostly sales boosters. But the “successor” to the M10, i.e., the M11, will require more substantive change, just like we’ve seen with each prior digital iteration from M8 to M9 to M240 to M10. [The M8.2 (and M8u options) were effectively P versions of the M8 before Leica developed the marketing speak.]. And then there are special editions, late model variants (like the M262), screenless versions and of course the Monochroms. All to boost sales and to play to the very diverse, and susceptible, M crowd.

Leica rumors have pics of the P up now. Looks the same as other P's. Near silent shutter and a touchscreen seem the only real "improvements".

 

Buttons are exactly the same as standard.

Likewise with the soft-release button. I bought the one with 'Leica' engraved on it, and it stays at an angle when it is fitted. A small thing, but then trifles make perfection as someone had said ..

The "P" versions have always been regular versions with minor upgrades. Nobody in their right mind would "upgrade" from the M10 to the M10-P. Both will be sold together for the remaining years of the M10-series, along with a M10-Monochrom eventually.

Looks like Leica are abandoning the sapphire screen option for the P model now. I have the M Mono mk1, and it has the sapphire screen. That screen is the only bit of the camera that's still pristine. But apparently Gorilla glass is pretty good these days.

That will be again a great fun on next Photokina 2018, if someone wants to operate this touchscreen with extra brought winter gloves.

And then he will have to hear again the arguments of the technicians that also the operating temperature of the M10-P like any other digital camera will start officially from an operating temperature of 0°C = 32°F.

"Yes, and how should Norbert Rosing photograph his polar bears, just from the well-heated camper?

Maybe the camera freezes, certainly the battery, but now also photographer's bare fingers on the touch screen?"

Hopefully nothing important needs to be set via touch screen.

It's logical to assume that the touchscreen operation will be optional and that the M10-P will operate exactly like an M10 in every way in terms of image review and menu setting.

It remains to be hoped that the development of the M10-P will keep close to the M10 and its touchscreen will be optional to operate.

The picture at photorumors still shows control buttons, but isn't that more of a fantasy drawing than a factory photo of Leica?

Normally, all touchscreens I operated replaced former control buttons.

There was always only one or the other option for a function, but never both together for the same.

Leica made an exception on the M10 with its ISO wheel and all its difficulties, so it's unlikely they might repeat unnecessarily something similar.

To be honest, I haven’t had any issues with the touch screen on the TL2.

 

If the M10-P has a touch screen, it will be for menu selections, and should otherwise be irrelevant for normal ovf use. If you use the evf, the eye sensor should disable the screen when you bring the camera to your eye. I know some have had issues with their TL2, but my experience has been good - no nose or other unintended activation of the touch screen.

 

Not sure this will be a problem, if the rumour is correct.

Unlikely, Leica hasn't done one for the M240-P as far as I know.

Leica issued a statement regarding such a M240 upgrade, albeit without the added buffer and frame lever...

I assume they followed through, but don’t really know. I wouldn’t be surprised at something similar for the M10, e.g., new top plate with script and without red dot. These are typical a la carte options.
