Crazy Rainbow Streak on DNG Photos after FW Update in DNG files??

I took a trip to Maine yesterday and brought my Q. When I got home and uploaded the photos, and I noticed that on all  DNG photos (landscape images with approx. 1/3 blue sky, there is some sort of rainbow color streaking across the frame on all of the photos. It is not present on JPGs, only on DNGs. It appears in the Windows 10 Photo App and Windows Photo Viewer (Legacy Windows program) but does not appear in LR CC

- Any ideas? Is this a RAW converter rendering issue? I checked my DNG photos what I have saved from my Leica SL, and all of its DNGs look fine in the same Windows 10 Photo App. Is this just a "Q" thing?

Puzzling, but I suspect that your Windows viewer is not dealing with the Q DNG files correctly. The fact that LR does not show the rainbow is a big clue. I would not depend on any other program than Lightroom, Camera Raw or Similar ones like ON1 to view DNG’s. It seems to me its a constant process for these programs to keep updated for the latest cameras and in this case I suspect to the latest DNG files on the Q. We know Rev. 3.0 worked on rendering the DNG’s faster. Maybe this is somehow incompatible with the Windows viewer? Wish I could be more help. Good luck.

None of the streaking is visible on the JPG when viewed on an iPad. However, I can see that the Raw dng file is completely geometrically distorted and Uncorrected and shows both curvature of the horizon and vignetting . One of the known features of the Leica Q is the substantial amount of lens correction applied to the dng image inside the camera . It’s important to use the correct RAW image viewer.

So, I recently heard back from Leica Technical Service. I sent Leica the affected DNG files and they weren't able to replicate the issue on their Windows system with the native Photo Viewer,

which is perplexing to me. as it displayed the issue on three different computers.

 

They said that it was probably the embedded JPEG which accompanies the DNG file which displays the artifacts.

 

They went on to say that I probably wouldn't be able to use the Windows Photo Viewer to display the DNG files properly, and I should just use Capture One or Lightroom for best results

 

Pretty much a lame excuse as far as I'm concerned as the camera 100% didn't exhibit the issue prior to the firmware update. They also claimed that this has never been reported before either.

 

Strange for sure.

Hi there,

Not knowing whether you've fixed your "rainbow' problem, I want to propose a potential remedy. I just had an occurrence of "rainbow", bending and pixelation in Silver Efex Pro 2 on my Mac. I resolved it by turning off usage of the GPU accelerator in the SEP2 software's settings.

Thanks for your tip, but nope, it is still occurring, but is fine on Lightroom CC. This only happens in the native Windows Photo Viewer Apps, so I doubt that I would be able to turn off or adjust any settings.

I will research the Nvidia adapter settings, but according to Leica, it is an embedded JPEG rendering issue

I had a similar issue with horrible banding in a landscape photo. I shot it in DNG am on the latest fW 3.1. This banding shows up on the Q's LCD during playback as well as the EVF. I used the Leica app to transfer it to my mobile phone to review the full DNG RAW file and it shows up exactly like it does on the Q! However when upload to LR the files look fine. I'm really stumped to why this is going on and wanted to know if anyone has experienced anything similar or has any guesses to what could be causing this? This is just a screen grab from the photo viewed on my mobile but it looks exactly like this on the Q's screen and evf. This was shot in RAW DNG 42.42MB iso 100 F5.0 1/125 sec. It was shoot using auto iso.

What you see on the back of the camera is a jpeg representation of the image taken.  The fact that you are shooting raw is irrelevant.  The camera shows the jpeg preview that is contained in the raw file.  I don't remember if the preview varies in quality with the JPEG resolution setting in JPEG resolution menu.

Actually the camera generates its own jpg file from the raw data to use on the display.
