Of course there is a difference in what a professional photographer, like Guy, needs to carry in his bag and what an amateur, like most of the people here, need.

 

Somewhere in the upper reaches of this thread I wrote that, in my experience, the number of good photographs shot is inversely proportional to the numebr of lenses carried. But my feeling that a lot of what we're seeing here is simple consumerism rather than a belief that having more lenses will make the owner a better photographer.

hahahhaha mitch....... missed that ......... love your reversed formula and probably fully agree with it..................

 

yes...... consumerism....... of course.......... but what feeeds this consumerism....... some "beliefs" that somehow entered to the mind ......... and one of those beliefs is the classic wrong formula for ignorants - have better lens have more lenses and get better photographer...............

 

 

then we start to call this particular lens that we should neccesarly buy a lens for portraits.......... one really must buy the new summicron 75 cause the old one summilux is not so so any more.......... and the 90mm elmar is too long for this special occasion.. and the noctilux is great for this but new summilux is great for that and the old summicron is for this......... and the old summilux is not good enough anymore cause it is not exiting anymore.........

concumerism - it is not a new toy any more....... who cares whether the summilux 50 is the best lens ........ it is not a new toy anymore............. now we are not about high quality of summilux..... not suddenly we are about the unque chracteristics of noctilux

Well true some of it is consumerism no question and i think that happens in any hobby or profession . Look at golf , will that 600 dollar new driver really give you the extra 10 yards there promoting. Some will think it will and some it will do that and than some just want to have that shiny new driver in there bag to look good. It happens in every walk of life but I see nothing wrong in that. Hey i shoot advertising stuff , i need people to buy product. LOL

We all have different needs and budgets and whatever makes the world go round and round is okay by me. Hey i want a Porsche because i just want one , but a VW will still get me from point A to B. My only concern is folks get out and get there money's worth and use them but hey it's there money and it is not mine, so be it. i like having a lot of lenses for different needs but being a Pro i have really different needs and it is not so much want them. I admit i maybe able to get by with a little less but i don't have much overlap really . The one luxury lens that is coming , i certainly could have just not bought it and still able to produce images and that is the Nocti but like a lot of lenses it has a certain look to it that is appealing. i think one of the issues with the M system is there just are so many choices in lenses both in focal length but in character too. just look at the 75 mm lenses they produce a different look . So there maybe a lot of overlap in some folks kits but i still believe in buying a lens trying it out and see if it works for you and if not than sell it and try something else. When i shot the DMR i went through 3 90 apo lenses just because I could not decide if i liked it more or less over the 80 lux. Ah well, it's all fun

Men especially tend to obsess about the tools/objects/equipment of their hobbies. Cars, boats, tennis racquets, golf clubs, guns, bicycles, stereo equipment. For many the technical aspects of the fine points of acquiring, customizing and working on the equipment is really the point. What functionally the stuff was intended to do is almost immaterial. Collecting Leica lenses or fixing old watches or cars -whatever make you happy if you've got the time and money to indulge.

IMO more lenses just add to the confusion, the less you have tends to focus the mind on what you can achieve with what you have or how you can manipulate the given situation to achieve the goal.

 

However, the thread should be viewed in the spirit of it's title, a bit of fun. An opportunity to read how others have spread their focal lengths, what they tend to use more or least. There is one thing for sure, the more one spends on fine optics the more one realises it does not translate into becoming a finer photographer, that gift comes from within and plenty of practice / teaching.

 

Still I enjoy reading how others have arrived where they are and why. Many of us are still learning the RF format, others have a wealth of experience to share. At the end of the day it's the image that tells the true story not so much what equipment was used, perhaps some of the positive energy here could be channeled into "how to" threads.

 

I've seen some lovely work here, the use of grain, B&W, abstract shapes, partial views of a subject, various depth of field, all of which have translated into fine imagery. I'd love to hear how those people arrived at the end result how the shot we actually see differed from

what was originally captured, but it takes those with the photographic ability, a thick skin and a desire to share to step up to the plate and impart their minds vision, the result and the methodology. In the absence of such a shining light, we mortals will search for the answer in the popular threads.:D

So far I have not yet read any comment from someone who believed more lenses make him a better photographer.

However I have read at least 20 times comments like "its not the equipment that matters but the person behind the lens" - Is there anybody who doesnt know that? This sentece -IMO-is much more boaring than looking into other peoples bags ;)

Okay i will say it , I'm a pig and the more lenses the better i am because i have more control on what i want to do. There i said it, now shoot me in the toe with a arrow. Anyone have any lenses for sale, must feed the pig.:D

 

Seriously if the equipment did not matter than why the hell are we shooting Leica than. Sorry good gear does help you do what you want to do easier. You can't shoot at 1.4 knowing your going to be soft right out of the gate, you need a lens that can handle 1.4 they way you want. Just like a good lens has the contrast and saturation that you need to produce the image you want without 10 minutes in PS to get. It helps having the right tools to get the job done correctly.

 

I know the argument more does not always mean better but on the other hand great tools in the right hands makes it easier to be creative also , it free's you up to think

you ask...... why leica then????

 

cause i dont have to think about anything when with leica...... nothing nothing..... lenses are great , camera is super simple (like photographing without camera at all - hahah)....... i simply dont have to think about anything technical or whatsoevrr .....

 

ah and agree.......... it is such a sexy tool :))

I'm the same photographer with one lens or a hundred. The reason I have Canon M mount lenses is I want to see what Sean means about a sunny day lens. I have cron's and luxes to find out the difference. Same with aspherical and pre or 50's,60's pieces. I had an M3 and three lenses long ago. Not any way I remember the effect of that gear. Learning again is my goal.

Call me what ever name you like but this exploration is a great experience. Matching what you learn so as to be able to select a lens because of it's character for a particular subject.

That's where I want to be.

28, 50, 75 crons + M8

and a large hole where the 5D used to be

Clearly I need to fill that hole with more Leica glass... 35mm will only take a small piece of that space, then 90mm then...

 

Would be interesting to measure just how much of the stuff people have admitted to gets used! For instance, in every 1000 frames, x% of each piece of kit gets used y% of the time. In my case:

 

M8 - 100%

28mm - 95%

50mm - 1%

75mm - 4%

 

Maybe that takes the fun out of this post though!

gary...... my excuses but i dont beleive in "sunny lens" or "portrait lens" or things like this.......

 

i can tell u that maybe the best sunny lens is 50 asph... for example......

why ?? cause it has almost no flare at all (almost in any condition).... it has a very high clerity and contrast...... as for ..... in "sunny conditions" i can simply adjust the materials i work with and i will get a super clean and super balanced in tonality negative or possitive...... (i do my film processing myself of course..... no body touches my film - surely not b/w)..........

 

the same about portrait techs etc etc......

 

i have a vintage 90mm lens that i love very much.... but i dont call it my "whatever" lens ....... portrait should be called i suppose. i make with it whatever i want...... and actually, it is the sunny conditions that i use it relatvly less especially in b/w....... cause it fllares very much....... but in balanced light i simply can push the film and add density to compansate for its inherernt low contrast etc........

 

so..... it is better to see the issue (lens characteristics) in wider perspective, rather calling a lens "sunny lens" etc etc....... and wider means to find the responivness of lens and material combination ...........

3000 years ago men were probably obsessing over which flint made the best arrowheads and knives, and which precise method of chipping made for the head with the straightest flight or the knife with the sharpest edge. (And - to keep it non-sexist - there are no doubt things that women obsess about of which males have no knowledge.)

 

With proper "editing" by the rational part of the brain, this obsessiveness is known as inventiveness, creativity, and craftsmanship. Without proper internal supervision, it becomes neurosis.

 

Maintaining a sense of humor about it shows the rational supervision is operating well.
