I'm going to Iceland - What lenses should I take? þetta reddast ...

...  who cares, it will turn out alright whatever you take.

If Iceland were to have a national slogan, it would be ‘þetta reddast’, which roughly translates to the idea that everything will work out all right in the end.

Maybe Leica users should try a bit of þetta reddast when going off to take pictures rather than agonising over what might be precisely the right lens combo to take on their travels

It will be interesting to see if the inhabitants of Iceland differ in their opinion from the visitors to Iceland.

In a similar thread to this one, I wondered about the opinions of the inhabitants of Iceland.

Now I know.

Indeed. I am always a bit puzzled about threads like this. I assume that somebody has a reason to travel somewhere. For instance, Iceland for its spectacular landscapes, New York for its bustle and people, Botswana for its wildlife, and so on. Now that means that you KNOW which subjects you will be photographing. And lens choice is determined by the subject, not by the geographic location...

Except situations aren’t so simple and some of the better people photos I’ve taken have been at destinations one would simplistically associate with landscapes, and vice-versa. I don’t judge people for deriving enjoyment or excitement or whatever from contemplating what gear they might take, just as I don’t judge people who throw one camera and a 35/2 into their bag and make it work. Different strokes for different folks.

Just some thoughts:

- people want to let other know that they're going to ...that place

- people want to let other know that they own those ..."rare/expensive/etc." gear

- most people don't know how to choose part of their (plenty of...) gear so ask for advices

- and more... :p

:D

I think that those threads are fun to answer

and hear some other answers

like this one.

...

If we had only useful threads, we may at most 2 to 10 a day :D.

OSX actually has an icelandic keyboard, if you look in the last tab of the international menu. Note that it may not be placed alphabetically...

How can you quickly  type þ on a std. keyboard ?  And ð like in Sauðarkrokur ?

And don't forget the power of the usual search engine. They auto-correct the hell outta ya queries.

Edit: Hmmmm that attachment 'blew up'....

When I went to Iceland I did bring too much equipment but what I found was that I primarily used my 28 and 50mm. In hindsight, if I had only brought my 35mm I would have been just fine. When I travel now that's usually what I bring. Keep it light and simple. Enjoy the trip!

Now there's a prime example of riotous optimism...

:D

I learn that Optimism is in DNA of Icelanders.

We mostly come from Norsemen that had to sail across the North Atlantic in a small wooden boat with nothing but the stars to guide them and hope that they wouldn't miss the small arctic island they were aiming for. They either had to be really, really desperate or have a really strong "þetta reddast" attitude.

It's probably not 100% true but it's a fun story about were we get this attitude from. The phrase itself is fairly new though.

:)

Marcg,

Thanks,  I learn a lot to better know Iceland/Icelander from your "innocent post".

You have very good points, but you donot have the polite tone.

Answers like this has too much of agony.
