Advertisement Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 Hi Ecaton, Take a look here Leica CM / ML?/ New Leica Mirrorless Announcement. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Mr WelshB Posted June 14, 2018 Share #362 Posted June 14, 2018 Hmmm. As well as buying Leica gear I also have been known to buy a watch or two. At the prices being quoted you have a wide horological choice. Watches are very high margin, so perceived value through innovation, design themes or provenance is very important to me and other buyers. The features on this watch are very standard. A movement delivering those quoted features is readily available at low cost "off the shelf" so don't get any ideas that this was entirely engineered just for Leica. I also don’t buy the spiel that this taps into Leica’s design heritage either - the watch looks ok but very similar to a multitude of other brands who are much cheaper and TBH look much better. I see no reason to buy this watch at that sort of price. If selling this stuff helps them continue to produce wonderful photographic equipment, all well and good but this does not cut the mustard. A bit like a Nissin SF60 flash unit then.
WhippingPost Posted June 14, 2018 Share #364 Posted June 14, 2018 This latest move by Leica reminds me of a company that bears the name of a fruit. Apple started as a personal computer startup but is now the world's largest consumer electronics company. I still clearly remember the day when the cellphone industry openly laughed at them when they introduced the iPhone, but look who's laughing its way to the bank now. Similarly, the watch industry just shrugged its shoulders when Apple introduced the smartwatch. Today, the revenue from that segment of their business easily dwarfs that of the biggest watch companies in the world. It's too early to tell if Leica can replicate Apple's business model, but I hope that no matter how successful they are in branching out to other non-photography business, they stay firmly grounded in their roots as a camera and lens manufacturer just as Apple is essentially still a personal computer company.
dkCambridgeshire Posted June 14, 2018 Share #365 Posted June 14, 2018 Watches? Seems an odd move to me. Yes I know they had various relatively cheap 'promotional' watches before but are the kind of watch purchasers with 10K to spend really going to buy a Leica watch over one of the more obvious luxury watch brands? Hmmmm No they are not very likely to spend that much money on a luxury watch … which is probably why Leica only plans to try and sell 400 … Such 'boutique marketing' gives Leica Camera AG and genuine Leica camera enthusiasts a bad name … especially amongst the WIS (watch collectors) fraternity. dunk
bags27 Posted June 14, 2018 Share #366 Posted June 14, 2018 An interesting factoid on Leica Rumors. Leica is now giving free M to L adapters with every new CL. What do we want to make of this? That maybe they’re trying to goose CL sales as they introduce a FF competitor? That maybe they’re trying to add value to the CL in advance of that new camera, effectively reducing the cost of the CL for M mount owners? That maybe a new camera will make using M lenses more attractively and that this is a compensatory gesture to the CL? Or none of the above..l

Or none of the above..l Leica Camera AG once gave away complimentary Leica R to 4/3 adapters to Digilux-3 purchasers … thus not unprecedented. Likely reason was to boost Digilux-3 sales. Adapters were made by Novoflex. dunk
earleygallery Posted June 14, 2018 Share #368 Posted June 14, 2018 Why? Watches are a bit obvious if you're moving into the luxury accessory market though. I'd prefer to see a range of Leica branded solid silver paperweights.

Martin B Posted June 14, 2018 Share #371 Posted June 14, 2018 An interesting factoid on Leica Rumors. Leica is now giving free M to L adapters with every new CL. What do we want to make of this? That maybe they’re trying to add value to the CL in advance of that new camera, effectively reducing the cost of the CL for M mount owners? That maybe a new camera will make using M lenses more attractively and that this is a compensatory gesture to the CL? Or none of the above..l When Sony introduced in 2013 the first A7 series FF MLC cameras, they provided in Australia and selected other countries a free Metabones adapter for Canon EF lenses. It was a smart move from Sony since they mostly hit Canon hard at the time with the introduction of this camera series, and this kind of adapter allowed users to continue using EF lenses. Many people switched from Canon to Sony at the time (not because of the adapter of course but this made the switch or addition even easier). Now forward to 2018 and seeing Leica giving out free M to L adapters. What does this mean - well, that M-mount in general remains much more in demand than the L-mount based gear. To make L-mount based cameras more attractive, this adapter is given as freebie to allow users instantly to use existing M-mount lenses on a new L-mount camera. Or in other words: the M10 is much more successful as seller than the CL.

As far as I'm concerned Apple is not a personal computer company any longer. They have not updated their desktop mac mini and mac pro lines forever (since 2014 or so). Actually the only up to date desktop computer they have is the all in one iMac, and their laptops have been getting worse as well (look up all the problems with macbook pro keyboards if you don't believe me). Sadly Apple are now totally focused on iphone, ipad, and probably on some future streaming tv service to compete with netflix and comcast. I pains me to say this since I was a huge Apple fan for a long time, but a year ago I got tired of waiting for them to get their focus back on computers so I switched to windows.
