I have recently moved from shooting a analogue Leica MP to the digital Leica M-D. I can not get used to the "loose" shutter dial on the M-D. I find it too easy to accidentally move the shutter dial, causing me to over/underexpose. Is it possible to get Leica to tighten the dial? (sorry if this has been posted before, I searched but did not find any answers about this)

There is nothing wrong with the shutter dial. This dial adjusts/ moves as intended but I would prefer if it was more tight, harder to dial.

There is if it moves accidentally as quoted in your first post.

When I street photograph, I prefer to set my exposure manually; shutter speed, aperture and ISO. I shoot these settings for hours, or as long as I see the light is unchanged. I walk and then I take a few image, and then I walk again, leaving the camera settings on my preferences and according to light. It is here between images when I walk, that I accidentally and without knowing, change the shutter values, because it is so easy to turn. Hope I have made my self clear. The shutter button on the analogue Leica MP, is wonderfully tight and will not change shutter values.

Hello Per,

This forum might actually still be functioning. A delay of a day or so in a response by someone who might have more information about a specific problem is usual.

Especially after the answers by David.

Or, it is possible that nobody has anything to suggest beyond your asking Leica directly, given David's comments.

Shutter speed dials should not move unexpectedly.

Best Regards,

Michael

My M240's shutter dial can be turned with one finger if I apply pressure. Not as light as aperture rings but not as tight that I have to necessarily use two fingers, and I like it this way. There is more positive lock on A where I am most of the time, therefore I haven't acccidentaly moved it, however I can see it may move if it gets bumped.

On my Film cameras (Nikon FM2 and old Konica) it is too tight for my comfort.

+1 and i would not like my M240's shutter dial to be as tight as my film M's. Matter of tastes but shutter speeds should be displayed in the VF in M as well as A mode or at least such display should be switchable to visible or hidden IMHO. I don't know if the M-D behaves the same way as the M240 though.

In VF, M-D behaves the same as M240 with "annoying" (at first but now used to it) or bonus of showing "remaining frames number" after each shot.

Never seen this frame number display in my M240's VF so far. How do you manage to trigger it? Just curious.

Sorry not to be clear.

The "frames remaining number" after shot is M-D feature (not possible to disable) only found on M-D not on other M .

...

For the shutter dial, I just put a stripe of colored tape in line with "A" to have visual and tactil "target".

Like here to all my Ms, since from my M8 days.

I would bet the tension on the stock shutter dial is very very similar to that of film M's, the difference being that the larger diameter dial offers more leverage so it feels lighter to turn. In all my digital Leica's I've not had the shutter dial move accidentally, and I carry them over my shoulder without any fancy case, or I stuff them unceremoniously into a bag, so your dial may be faulty. On the other hand you could consider how you carry the camera and see if it is actually hand trouble, some people have fingers that go everywhere, some are unconscious fiddlers, some have showy wide camera straps that rub against the controls.

Exactly! I have long thought this would be of great benefit and would be very easy to implement.

What a good idea. So easy and discrete.

Thanks for demonstrating this.
