Advertisement Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 Hi scott kirkpatrick, Take a look here So, who's buying the 16-35mm?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
scott kirkpatrick Posted May 23, 2018 Share #322 Posted May 23, 2018 So how do you get flare when it is desired these days? Remember the classic movie shots with zoom lenses giving a long string of colored blobs from the sun to Peter Fonda as he rides by on his chopper?
LD_50 Posted May 23, 2018 Share #323 Posted May 23, 2018 Look at the lower part of the flag: Alarm! Flare! Immediate return to Wetzlar! On the more serious side: I have seen flare, but you have to work (hard) to get the lens flaring. I do not even think of how the Nikon 12-24mm f2.8G or the Sigma 18mm f1.8 ART would handle such a harsh light condition... Yes, the 16-35 is very, very flare resistant! From the public celebration of the national day in Norway, 17th May, by-the-way. SL +16-35@17mm. I shot quite a bit with the Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8 and noticed flare immediately upon receiving it and had to always watch out for it. I haven’t shot much with the 16-35 since receiving it last week but have not seen anything similar. The Nikkor’s bulbous front element seemed able to pick up light sources that were not a problem with other lenses. Otherwise I really enjoyed the Nikkor.

thighslapper Posted May 23, 2018 Share #325 Posted May 23, 2018 (edited) Just messing about with the 16-35 that arrived yesterday ..... the very close focussing distance gives this lens another dimension entirely ...... sillbeers15 Posted May 24, 2018 Share #328 Posted May 24, 2018 After personally experiencing and receiving aligned positive comments. I’m glad my final decision was to get the 16-35mm over the WATE to pair with my M10. The push really came after I acquired the SL75 lens as the 16-35 + 75 pair will replace my 24-90 as alternative choice when I travel. Perhaps I will still get a WATE down the road as it also performs well and compact (with my M10.
Alistairm Posted May 24, 2018 Share #329 Posted May 24, 2018 I think I’ll be selling my WATE.
thighslapper Posted May 24, 2018 Share #330 Posted May 24, 2018 I think I’ll be selling my WATE. I'm pondering as well ...... much as I am reluctant to let good M lenses go, I can't see it ever being used on the SL or CL again ..... OK, it's small and light, but the difference in image quality and flexibility compared to the 16-35 is huge. I can't see me ever returning to an M rangefinder ...... the CL is my spare body/compact alternative....
scott kirkpatrick Posted May 25, 2018 Share #331 Posted May 25, 2018 (edited) It's fun to do closeup shots from 35 to 16 mm focal length. The lens handles OOF backgrounds very well. Here's f/4.5: S1020212 by scott kirkpatrick, on Flickr and f/11: S1020213 by scott kirkpatrick, on Flickr What I don't see if the lens-shaped vignetting that comes from the lens functioning as a long thin tube. The SL Summicrons will sometimes do this. Edited May 25, 2018 by scott kirkpatrick
tom0511 Posted May 26, 2018 Share #332 Posted May 26, 2018 I'm pondering as well ...... much as I am reluctant to let good M lenses go, I can't see it ever being used on the SL or CL again ..... OK, it's small and light, but the difference in image quality and flexibility compared to the 16-35 is huge. I can't see me ever returning to an M rangefinder ...... the CL is my spare body/compact alternative.... This was my plan when I sold my M10... just to miss the simplcity of the M and get one again. The images of the 16-35 look great, and the combo 16-35 + 70 sounds great. BUt then the 24-90 is faster and offers IS. So I am not sold yet that the 16-35 could replace my 24-90 in use, and carrying both seems quite heavy. So for now I will stay with 21/3.4 as widest + 24-90 + 70. meerec Posted May 26, 2018 Share #333 Posted May 26, 2018 I handled the demo 16-35 lens at the Leica Singapore Store today. What a pleasure to use. The zoom function was extremely smooth and just the right traction. Wonderfully built lens. Looks good on my SL too.
jrp Posted June 4, 2018 Share #334 Posted June 4, 2018 OK, so they seem to have managed to get a few demo 16-35mm lenses out (presumably from a test build batch), but where's the first real batch? I suppose that I shouldn't hold my breath. The 90mm is still not available, despite having been announced a couple of months before the 16-25mm, although here do seem to be one or two 75mm about. LD_50 Posted June 4, 2018 Share #335 Posted June 4, 2018 I was able to purchase the 16-35 that was in stock at a US Leica store. Based upon his, I believe the first real batch is out. If you’re in the US, keep checking with the various Leica stores.
FlashGordonPhotography Posted June 4, 2018 Share #336 Posted June 4, 2018 Well, I said I wouldn't. Not for me I said. Huge! Wrong range. It should have been a 12-24, I said...... But they had one in stock........ What's a fella supposed to do? Great lens. Lighter than it looks (or better balanced maybe?). Optically looks spectacular so far. People (including me) are buying the lens in stores, boxed and with all accessories, warranty, etc.; I don't think stores would sell "test build batches", whatever that is Best regards, Vieri
thighslapper Posted June 4, 2018 Share #338 Posted June 4, 2018 (edited) I think he means the 'ongoing' production after the initial batch that Leica spread very thinly throughout the world....... From past experience there is usually a 6-8 week gap till they have another supply ready to ship.... assuming no disastrous issues have appeared with the 'early adopter guinea-pigs' ..... I have pre-orders with 2 major UK dealers (one is a Leica boutique) and know for a fact I am top of the list for both. Neither have contacted me yet so it is clear no new stock has appeared in the UK. By devious means I managed to source a 16-35 elsewhere .... but have kept my other orders 'live' as I was interested to know when more lenses appeared and pass the info on to those still waiting ..... I have my SL75 for more than 3 mths and 16-35 for more than a month since delivery. That is why you should preorder early instead of wondering about ‘where’ are the lenses.
