Csacwp Posted January 29, 2018 Share #1 Posted January 29, 2018 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) In terms of color and rendering style, how do these two lenses differ? Does the v5 have more rounded faces and smoother, slower dropoff of focus like other Mandler lenses? Is there any glow at f2? I don’t like high contrast modern renderings with backgrounds that fall out of focus seemingly on a single plane, so I am highly considering switching to the pre-apo v5. Advertisement Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 Hi Csacwp, Take a look here 50 cron v5 vs 50 apo. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
PaulJohn Posted January 29, 2018 Share #2 Posted January 29, 2018 The v5 cron can sometimes have a ‘busier’ bokeh but not distracting from the subject in my opinion. The APO has a contrast drop off as well as focus drop off which makes it quite special. I don’t think either lenses exhibit glow. I’ve just sold my APO and bought a used cron v5 ( for the second time). I’m going to revisit some of my APO shots with the V5 and compare. Csacwp Posted January 29, 2018 Author Share #3 Posted January 29, 2018 Maybe it’s the contrast falloff I am disliking... it renders in such a modern way, and I often feel like the shots look like those from the Otus 55. I’m looking for a 50mm to complement my 75 summilux and 90 pre-asph... something with the Mandler look. The v5 seems like a good option as I can buy it new, but I’m concerned it too might be too modern in rendering, though I’ve never tried one.

I did the same: the v5 is plenty sharp, has a gentler contrast, which, on a digital sensor, translates into more "beautiful, rounded" images.
PaulJohn Posted January 29, 2018 Share #5 Posted January 29, 2018 If you like the 90 pre-ASPH which I also have then you will probably prefer the 50 lux pre-ASPH too. I have this amazing lens which does have the glow which I think you are looking for. I bought the 50 lux pre expecting to upgrade to the modern ASPH version but I have no desire to do so now I have become familiar with this lens. Possibly the best rendering lens ever in my opinion. Rendering is very subjective after all. I have bought the cron to compliment the lux as they are very different.

Not sure why you are surprised a modern lens (APO 50) renders in a modern way. It was designed to explloit the resolving power of sensors into the future. You will certainly find the v5 'cron much gentler in its rendering. Although a subscription site, you will read a very detailed comparison of the two lenses on Sean Reids "Reids Reviews" http://www.reidreviews.com/articleindextable.html. Csacwp Posted January 29, 2018 Author Share #7 Posted January 29, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) I knew it was modern... I used to shoot with it and a 90 apo before finding that I prefer the Mandler lenses. So at f2, in what ways do the v5 cron and pre-asph 50 lux differ? lct Posted January 29, 2018 Share #8 Posted January 29, 2018 To complement my 75/1.4 and 90/2 pre-asph i prefer the ZM 50/1.5 personally but it's just me and a 50/1.4 pre-asph will do the job as well. Now the 50/2 v5 is also a Mandler lens so it works fine with the former lenses. BTW none of those 50mm lenses have any significant "glow" i.e. halos around highlights if you choose a 50/1.4 pre-asph v2 or v3. 50/1.4 v1 is another story but i have no experience with it.
