The real deal clincher though was that I preferred the rendering of the older model. I did borrow one for a short while which was a bit tatty and had a less than perfectly smooth focus.I did toy with the idea of a CLA and repaint job but by then the cost was rising and I had had my hands on a new one. I do wish in hindsight that I had looked for one of these years ago when they where really cheap . However having seen what can be produced with this lens with care and a decent understanding, by the contributors to this thread inc yourself I am happy I have one. wattsy Posted May 28, 2020 Share #1003 Posted May 28, 2020 Time for a thread bump. 90 Thambar-M and Macro adapter-M on an M240. A Military orchid (Orchis militaris) starting to go over. This was photographed at around F6.3 or so. Welcome, dear visitor! Gerbs Posted September 8, 2020 Share #1007 Posted September 8, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just spent too much time trying to find the 6-bit lens encoding for the new Thambar... as I am getting a screw mount adapter TODAY with encoding recesses cut into it, and want to update my adapter. So, for anyone else on a search, I turned up 001100 or WWBBWW as the coding (0=white=W, 1=black=B). Saw it on a video from 2017: https://www.reddotforum.com/content/2017/12/look-new-leica-thambar-m-90mm-f2-2/ Surprisingly the coding wasn't listed on any of the coding tables I saw, which is why it took "too much time" to find it. And none of the lens photos I saw showed the back with the coding, fortunately I saw the video... Gerbs Posted September 9, 2020 Share #1009 Posted September 9, 2020 This is basically a fully "Thambarized" glamour shot of some field flowers. The cool thing is in the second screen grab of the EXIF data. Note under Lens it says "Thambar-M 1:2.2/90". Aha, I bought a screw mount adapter from Fotodiox to turn my 1937 Thambar into the new one! They sell adapters with machined slots for digital encoding, and it works perfectly with a little matte paint. These adapters are VERY high quality, beautifully finished and deburred. And why not encode an old lens with the closest thing you can find? Welcome, dear visitor! Gerbs Posted September 12, 2020 Share #1010 Posted September 12, 2020 Backlit cattails in front of a pond This is pretty much straight out of the camera, just brought the blacks down some, and this is a crop. I cannot get over how the light is bleeding through from the sun on the pond, presumably a strange bokeh effect. M10, 2.2/90mm Ernst Leitz Wetzlar Thambar (1937) Welcome, dear visitor! Bigdukeron Posted September 15, 2020 Share #1011 Posted September 15, 2020 I have been using my Thambar a lot, but sadly focusing is completely off on my M240... So I use it on the Z7 with Adapter. Very happy with the results. Leica wants me to send in the camera and lens, but to be honest I cannot wait 6 months of this going back and forth... Welcome, dear visitor! I may sound very weird but when I see the little circles I immediately think of the Mirror Telephotos used on SLR's. Of course they are longer lenses , yet this is reminiscent. As some users posted in the past of this thread, I think it‘s easier to use with digital medium because of the ease of viewing the effects of the thambar immediately after the shot. Before i went down the road to shoot with my Thambar I read the whole Thambar-crasy-thread and learned a lot. 1
