MarkP Posted December 23, 2017 Share #221 Posted December 23, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ask f Bill, I have not been so fortunate. I ordered from Amazon on Wednesday, and paid for one-day shipping, expecting the package to arrive on Thursday. It did not, and so I contacted Amazon late Thursday, and received assurance from the agent that it would arrive today. Late this afternoon, realizing that it would not arrive today, I contacted Amazon again, and a different agent assured me that the package would arrive tomorrow (Saturday). Within an hour, I received a follow-up call from a third Amazon agent to confirm my shipping address, which was a pretty good indicator that it will not arrive tomorrow. I was right. Shortly after my conversation with the agent, I get a UPS tracking number which shows a scheduled delivery day for Tuesday. That will mean that it will have taken six days for a next-day package. I understand that Amazon and UPS are covered up due to Christmas rush, but still six days!? If I had ordered new underwear, I wouldn't be so concerned. But a new camera? That is an entirely different matter. Merry Christmas! Ask for a refund from Amazon for the expedited shipping. Better still, ask for a discount on the camera .

B&H has always had primo service from what I have seen. Hope you get it Tuesday. Edited December 23, 2017 by Bill W
FlashGordonPhotography Posted December 23, 2017 Share #224 Posted December 23, 2017 First, let me preface that I am a fan of the X1d and not trashing it by comparing it to Leica. But in no way do I feel is built as well as a Leica. Just look at the recent posts about the SD card slot door hinge cracking. And the body scratches super easily. So, best to treat it with little more care. I do love the design and how it feels in the hands. Why do we have to argue this? Not arguing. Just a different opinion. I'm up to about 4K shots on my X1D. 80% of those were with the camera on a sling strap and no bag in Cuba. My body doesn't have a mark on it. My hinge is fine. If we get into build quality I've never had so many camera and lenses require service as much as Leica. New M and S sensors. AF gears in S lenses. Misaligned SL sensors. loose M lens elements. Buggered flashes. I'm just not seeing what you're seeing. That's all. Gordon
Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted December 23, 2017 Share #225 Posted December 23, 2017 (edited) Remember, Neil, that the X1D has a different aspect ratio (4:3) than the S (3:2), so you may find that you eventually prefer somewhat different focal lengths/ fields of view. Jeff Jeff made a very important observation yesterday regarding the different aspect ratios between the two systems 3:2 for Leica and 4:3 for Hasselblad. So I went to one of my S pictures and had a look for myself.......Below is a picture of my buddy Azura, this was shot with my Leica S120mm lens and cropped to the 4:3 Hasselblad aspect ratio. To my eye anyway; the Hasselblad 4:3 ratio looks more like a ~150mm shot compared to the S120 even though they are the same picture. After seeing this I will get the XCD 90mm to start with and add to that as and when funds become available. Welcome, dear visitor! Been shooting with them for close to 25 years. Not a scratch either. An R8, once that broke. First T died and was replaced within warranty. The X1d has been fine so far except for the cracked part in the SD card area along the hinge. You might want to examine that area more closely, as well as anyone getting one new as some occur out of the box brand new. Mine has also scratched easily. Is yours black or silver? Might make a difference. But overall, love the camera. It is made very well. But, just not as well as a Leica. My opinion. I'm ordering a silver one and a can of black paint.......I cant see the point of paying an extra 2 grand for a black paint job...........As far as I know the camera comes with a 1 year warranty so that will be long enough to see if its going to break, and possibly in 12 months time I will probably have a X2D and a S008 to play with :) Neil

I don’t mind the scratches, really. As long as the camera works, all is fine. Even the recent crack in the SD compartment, I believe can still secure the door if falls apart, so will not cause me to stop using it. Hoping the x2d is even better. The S8 will likely be out of my budget .
Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted December 23, 2017 Share #229 Posted December 23, 2017 Has anyone got the RRS L plate on there X1D. I’m away to order a Harrison Tent and some 8x10 film and thought i would just go ahead and get the L plate at the same time if it’s okay? FlashGordonPhotography Posted December 23, 2017 Share #230 Posted December 23, 2017 I have the RRS plate on my X1D as I do on all my cameras. I don't usually have the "L" part on but always the base. I leave the L in my bag. Because of the 4:3 ratio I don't tend to use it as much but it's there when I need it. The "L" gets in the way of the SD door if locked in close to the body. You can sort of move the door round a bit around or just have it stick a bit further out like I do. Also, although my camera is perfect keep an eye on the SD card door. It is a real issue for some. Kind of like the S lens fail for the 007. Not always but more often than it should. Belle123, my body is silver. Might be the combo of the RRS plate and a sling strap (makes the camera hang a certain way). Or I've been lucky. I still remember how lousy the finish was on my XPan...... Neil, The ratio change is m ore than just cropping the 3:2. You're getting more height. So the diagonal is about the same. So it feels wider in the short side and longer in the long side. The S120 (I also have) doesn't feel like the XC 90mm. It'd be a 110ish.... In your case I'd look at the 120mm. Gordon Gordon

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Harrison tents are brilliant. I have the “pup” tent for my 4x5. Very nicely made tent. Make sure you store it right - the fabric allegedly needs to breath so don’t keep rolled up permanently in its bag (I think they suggest storing loose in a cardboard box!) Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted December 24, 2017 Share #234 Posted December 24, 2017 Gordon I have the Profito B1 heads. I use the profoto air remote on my leica S to trigger the heads. I also have the profoto Nikon remote that I use with my Nikon cameras. Do you know what remote will work on my X1D..... Nikon or Air?? Bill W Posted December 24, 2017 Share #235 Posted December 24, 2017 Early last year I sold my Nikon gear which included two flashes. I guess I will need to buy another one. The X1D manual list several Nikon units that they recommend and they do not recommend any others.

I do know I bought a Godox Nikon adaptor and that does NOT work in TTL. However it's perfect in manual. My Elinchrom's (also manual) work great as well. If I want TTL I'll shoot a Leica. Hmmm. Steve Ash Posted December 25, 2017 Share #238 Posted December 25, 2017 I am following Neil's journey into the X1D territory with interest. From the technical data sheet the x1d looks like an interesting camera. But scrolling through images tagged "x1d" on instagram I feel uninspired and bored by what I see. Instead, I love almost all images of Neil in the S thread -especially his landscape shots. I am really looking forward what he lis bringing to the table with the x1d.
