I wander around my home city of Glasgow a fair bit. I always have either my Leica M Monochrom mk1, or an analogue M loaded with black and white film with me. I think that finding interesting photographs on the street is pretty much the hardest type of photography. But when you do get something, it's very rewarding. What does anyone else think/find?

A few pictures I've got around Glasgow with my M cameras.

I also think that, worldwide, the architecture following WWII was very bland, which I believe reflected an apocalyptic world view.  It seemed for a few decades that we were all going to go up in one great nuclear fireball, so why bother building beautiful structures?  Washington DC is a great example of this where the pre-War Federal buildings are quite stunning.  Then there is the drab architecture of the 50, 60s and 70s.  Then when the Berlin Wall came down and the USSR collapsed an optimism about survival of the planet and humankind crept back into art, especially architecture.  This is one reason why I believe street photography is so important.  Contemporary street photographs are just daily life that we strive to make interesting through capturing patterns or gestures or interesting light, but even bland old street photographs are fascinating to see how life was in yesteryear.

I happen to disagree with your opinion on architecture of the 50's, 60's and 70's. Let us not forget that the housing buildings in eastern Europa of that period was rather different from the buildings in other parts of Europe. But many countries have built rather characterless housing buildings, as Colin's photo shows. More out of neglect and lack of financial possibilities than out of fear of a nuclear fireball, I think. But we do agree on the importance of street photography!

Thanks, Lex. There's definitely a sadness about any place that humans have deserted

Le Corbusier had a lot to answer for in designing tower blocks (vertical cities) for working class citizens. Along with putting the automobile as the priority over humans, our city planners turned livable places into irrelevant unlivable sculptures in concrete. Even without the “excuse” of WWII bombing US cities did the same thing. I wonder what we have learned and whether we will ever apply that learning...
