Was going through my old negs and came across this image from 1998. It has no real artistic merit. No great lighting, no great composition. It's just Bob Geldof leaving the Tex Mex pub in Glasgow. A snatched picture.

1998 was the year I got my first Leica, a used M6. I paired it with what's now generally called the eight element Summicron (they were cheap back then), and that's what this picture was shot on. Tri-X was the film. I was freelancing for the national newspapers, and it was a time when I was exceptionally busy.

Although the newspapers ran colour pictures in 1998, they still had black and white pages. If a picture wasn't colour, it wasn't the end of the world. I was on a day off, and someone rang to let me know that Geldof had been spotted drinking in Tex Mex on Bath Street. He was still quite famous at the time. I happened to be nearby, and all I had was that M6, loaded with Tri-X. I went round and waited no more than five minutes, before he emerged. I only got this one frame, but it was good enough, and several newspapers ran it.

It was one of only a handful of times, I was able to use a film Leica M for newspaper work. Things have changed so much since then.

To quote Doc Holliday from the movie Tombstone "Such ugliness.  I abhor ugliness..."

Some say a successful photograph is one which elicits a strong response from the viewer ...irrespective of the right or wrongs of that,  it is really no big issue for me..since others say beauty and therefore ugliness is in the eye of the beholder.

Today while walking around the neighborhood, I came across this sad specimen, an icon of my youth, and one that that I lusted hard after, an abandoned Porsche 928, covered in a thick layer of dust, all four tyres empty of air. Looked like it hadn't been touched in years, but bodywork in good nick and the interior looked ok-ish. Ugh, my heart wept. I hate to see this, but I love it at the same time. It's an S4, an automatic, unfortunately, and those wheels can't be original, but this is like finding a Rolex in a thrift store. If I met the owner I would definitely make him an offer. I wonder why it's been left like this? For me, the body shape has only improved with age.

Not 10 minutes down the road, I spotted this similarly abandoned, desperately dusty and unloved, Ferrari Mondial. Admittedly, not one of the marque's finest models, but a Ferrari nonetheless. This one, again, seems salvageable.
