Christopher -

On virtually any day you'll see people lined up to be photographed at both ends of the bull, and many at this end make manual or even lingual contact for their photos.  Notice how the oxidation is worn from the rear leg hocks which people used to position themselves, as well as on the gonads?  There's a huge Botero nude man at the shops on Columbus Circle, and it's member has no oxidation at all.

Stuart,

Thank you for the illuminating comment. I live in NYC and yet only recently noticed the excitement the far end of the bull creates, especially among the visiting Latin people on the day I took the picture. The gonads are considered good luck, similar to kissing the Blarney Stone in Ireland. Covid has kept people away so there has been little traffic until tourism resumed recently.

As a school child I remember visiting the Museum of Natural History and noticed a dark bronze bust of a lightly clothed woman in one gallery. She had shining breasts, polished by thousands of school children's hands in the same way. People will be people :)

Here is the plaza during the height of covid. The bull is at the right edge.
