SL Price Reduction

Since February, you could already get this camera for $800 off on Amazon.

I think it's a combination of slow sales after early adaptors (of which I am one), competitive market pressures whether direct or indirect competitors (e.g., X1D, M10, and A9), and a refresh upcoming (had this been a 36 mp sensor like the D810 it would have had more staying power).

I shoot fashion and use the D810 (of which I have 3) for that. If the SL had the resolution and dynamic range of the D810 I would use that but as it is, I use the SL for general purpose work.

Well it's still at the old US level pricing in Oz....

Doesn't matter for me. Mine already paid for themselves. Except for a high resolution version I can't see how they could upgrade the body for me. The only changes I want are firmware based.

The only reason I could see for a hardware change would be if they wanted to standardise to the M10 sensor or offer a higher resolution version. Either way my bodies are just fine (although I'd add a high res version in a second).

So I vote for price standardisation with a side order of additional competition.

There a new TL coming and the S desperately needs an upgrade before the SL2 arrives.

Is this already the end of the SL story, or is this the restart with an improved body?

Leica should make a statement, just to encourage new customers to invest in the SL system. Currently I wouldn't buy one, maybe the big price drop is the start of a clearance sale and the end of the SL system?

They've announced a roadmap for lens releases. That says more than a price drop.

Don't you think Leica prices its products buy what the market will bear? They know their customers and what we will pay for what they build. Is the Noctilux really worth $10,800 but they sell all they make.

It will come out what this price drop means, soon enough.

The SL with its price drop peaks my interest.

Is this arrogance?

More likely setting expectations for the next S i think which if it indeed comes with 70-80MP will almost certainly be more expensive...

Perhaps we know in September...

Well, if the new one will do DNG video and full frame width 4K, it will bring it right where it should be with cine people.

I just called the DC Leica Store that I purchased it from and they refunded me. Phew. Although now I'm wondering if an SL2 is coming soon. Does anyone know relatively how quickly a new model is announced after a price drop?

usaly within a month or two then on the shelfs within 18 months :) :)

I just talked with my contact in KL and he says that there is nothing new in the pipe line, and that there is just an adjustment due to the slow sales and also the new to be announcement of the Nikon MF mirror less camera...............hahahahahah

the roadmap ist just a statement of intent. Leica has announced an digital R-System at photokina some years ago.... ever seen one?

The roadmap is a statement of intent, exactly.

The price reduction is not a statement that they are abandoning the system.

What am I missing here?
