Sorry for not being clearer Jaap.  Out of curiosity I went through the process of 'building' a silver chrome M246 in the a la carte configurator,  The default option is for a 'classic slotted screw', but the red dot alternative costs an extra UD$260.

There are good photographers whose cameras cost less than that.

so a lot of new gatherers have begun using DSLR's to be more discreet.

So they didn't switch to DSLR's because they were 1/10th the price? Or because there employer provided them.

I think thats a bit of a stretch...yes some may have switched to be more discreet, but the vast majority did because...well they are cheap.

I'd say you're right about that.  I'm thinking of the news gatherers like Andy Portch, who has been using Panasonic GH cameras for some years now.  Small size, decent image quality, and the ability to gather news footage very discreetly is why he chooses the DSLR form factor.

Having said that, a number of freelancers are going with large sensor cams like the Canon C300, C100, Sony FS5 and FS7, and these are much more expensive and reasonably larger than simple DSLR's.

Interestingly, I was recently at a very media-heavy event with people from every major new channel and some independents.  Major channel people still used ENG cameras, presumably because they are very reliable workhorses which are specifically designed for news gathering.  The independents were using DSLR's.  A very small number were using mirrorless cameras like the Sony A6300, Sony A7s and Panasonic GH4.  Not a single person I saw was using a large sensor cinema camera like a C300, even though they are heavily used in tv reality shows and some larger current affair shows.

Apologies for the offtopic divergence.

My M4 doesn't have any kind of a dot.  People still recognize it as a Leica.  I covered the red dot on my M10 with "automotive black chrome tape" (best camera tape ever) and no one recognized it in the street as a Leica except the occasional photography enthusiast.  Then I took the tape off and spent weeks shooting in the street and STILL no one recognized it as a Leica except other photographers.  I've concluded that the dot thing is really a non-issue unless you are photographing photographers in the street :) .  Most street subjects could care less about the dot or the camera you are shooting with.. It's about HOW you are shooting in the street ...

So sad :(  Reminds me of the early days of mobile phones, when drivers in Brazil (from memory) were seen talking into blocks of wood painted black because it was cool to be seen talking into a mobile phone while driving.  Now it will cost a hefty fine (talking into a real phone, not a block of wood).

I shoot both Fujifilm and Leica, and the X100T and X-T2 certainly need no red dot!
