bherman01545 Posted March 8, 2017 Share #1  Posted March 8, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) All;  I just picked up a new Leica SL and was considering a half case, such as the Arte Di Mano. I have an M and never contemplated one, but I figured with the larger lenses on the SL, coupled with the fact that, (from what I've heard), the anodized finish on the SL is more prone to wear than (for example) my silver-chrome M240, I figured that I would look into it as an option.  My only concern is that the SL is sort of a large-ish body to begin with, so would it turn the SL into an ergonomic nightmare?  I'm looking for comments or folks who have a half case already, what they think of it?   Thanks!   -Brad

ropo54 Posted March 8, 2017 Share #2  Posted March 8, 2017 I have an Angelo-Pelle case and have tried the Arte di Mano case.  The A-Pelle case is quite nice, but does not have the quality construction and superb leather that the A di M had.  It is also about 50-60% of the cost. I opted for the brown ostrich upgrade.  I do not have a battery door, and this would be nice, but seems less necessary on the AP case, as it comes off of the body much easier than the A di M case did. It was a struggle to get the A di M case off, perhaps the one I sampled was a tad too small, as it was a return to my Leica store and they had no others in stock.  I find I do not like the added size of my grip needed when having a case on the camera!  Perhaps I will get used to it, after not having used a case.  OTOH, I do think having a case is likely to minimize exposure to abrasions, so will keep it on. thighslapper Posted March 8, 2017 Share #3  Posted March 8, 2017 I have an Arte di Mano but after a few days I just found it made the camera too bulky so it now resides in a cupboard ...... Also I now have a full sized RRS baseplate on permanently so it is redundant. Shame as it looks great in the same black leather they use for Hermes handbags ......  Despite extensive use mine has no scratches or paint defects after 16 months. I have a single 3mm ding near the base where I clearly whacked it against something, but otherwise it is unmarked.
ramarren Posted March 8, 2017 Share #4 Â Posted March 8, 2017 No case. No marks or dings. Cases make this camera too big and bulky, just get in the way.
Robert E Posted March 9, 2017 Share #5  Posted March 9, 2017 My SL has the Luigi Leicatime black leather case which fits like a glove. I started out using the Lugi leather strap that came with it, the strap is wider than his normal ones. Then I found a super deal on a Tieherup Rock n Roll black braided strap which I like better, so I now use that on the Leicatime case. To me using a case to protect my investment is a no brainer. It save the camera finish from the usual "brassing" you see on all the black Leica Ms. And who can deny the wonderful feeling of nice Italian leather in your hand?
Bill W Posted March 9, 2017 Share #6 Â Posted March 9, 2017 No case here, the camera is the right size just the way it is. I tend to be careful with my camera stuff to begin with. I have the a d m case on my M but it sure is a pain to change the battery or take out the memory card.
Mikewest Posted March 9, 2017 Share #7  Posted March 9, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I Had the Arte Di Mano... I didn't like it: the camera was too bulky with it. I have big hands... and yet the camera was less comfortable to use with the half case. Furthermore, the joystick was harder to use... :/

fstop Posted March 10, 2017 Share #9 Â Posted March 10, 2017 I don't have an opinion on SL cases per se, but that pic posted by ropo54 is of one ugly case. It looks like frozen vomit.

fstop Posted March 11, 2017 Share #11 Â Posted March 11, 2017 Rob . . . I did say that I don't have an opinion on SL cases "per se," meaning their use or application. Having no opinion on using a case is different from having an opinion on what a particular case looks like. In any event, I meant no offense.
