I am thinking about adding to my Leica collection and I am on the fence about either a used M 240 or M 262.

I have noticed that the used market on the M 240 is abundant and also cheaper then a used M 262.

As of now I have narrowed it down to a used M 262 w/h Leica warranty for $3950 USD or a used M 240 again with warranty for $3500

I am tempted by the M 240 to save a little money yet I have no use for video yet the lighter M 262 is also very tempting.

Any advice?

ps. I already own a SL and a S 006

Good question yet on the used market the 262 are fetching more then the M 240's clearly because there are way more 240's out there then 262's and now with a lot of people wanting the M10 is creating a glut of M 240 on the used market

I don't know myself which one to keep, M262 or M240.

Each one please me in different way.

I have bought my M262 new and M240 cost me far less money, but second hand and some years older.

The 80g less is nothing, but when in use I much appreciate in the field.

The EVF can be handy for some works, but not really "Leica M-like" with the thing stuck on the top.

So I've narrowed it down

$3500 for a used M240 silver not registered so I assume I could register it and receive a warranty

$3900 for a used M262 same thing not registered.

Both camera are mint condition with under 500 clicks

Or

$5695 for a new M10

As you have an SL, you would not be pleased by the M240 + EVF, it's slow with longgg blackout after trigger.

So the M262 hasn't that to be tempted, so I would choose M262 if I had SL.

But, if I didn't have my 2 x M (240+262), I would buy new M10 :p .

Maybe, in few days, I would swap, but the decision is not done yet.

Yes I do have the SL I would never use the EVF on the M240 I am just trying to get my head around why an M262 is more money then a M240 ok I get it, it's 60gm lighter and aluminum top plate yet is that worth and extra $400

Now you have to choose M 262 or M240.

And maybe later, swap to M10.

While you can, why not go to a dealer and hold one (M 240, 262, M10) to make your decision.

In your place, as I have "seeeen and feeeel" M10 for few minutes (that's enought for me), I would go for M10.

The difficulty is which one 240/262 has to go, I can't make decision.

But that's me and you may want to try M 240 or M 262.

Less than 500 clicks...

I often wonder what people buy a camera for.

I think they buy a camera not for taking pictures but just to sport an expensive "new" model in the neighborhood.

500 clicks is what I usually do in a week with my oooooooold camera.

I own a M-262, and love it. Truth be told, there isn't all that much difference between the M-240, M-262 and (strangely enough) the new M10. All 3 have 24 Mpx sensors. The M-240 has video and live view, The M10 does away with video and the M-262 has neither. To me, the biggest advantage of the M10 is the improved low light sensitivity. The other improvements (bar one) are minor, but good upgrades. The thinner body of the M10 is nice, but there isn't that much difference and I can live with mine. The M10 has a nicer arrangement for the ISO selector, and the two position power switch (on and off) The M10 will shoot at 5 frames per second, while my M262 chugs along at 3 (again, not a big deal). The only problem with the M10 is the lower capacity battery (as I understand it, it is rated at 40% lower capacity than the previous battery), but it was needed to fit into the slimmer body. Basically, as I see it, the M10 is an evolutionary upgrade, and especially if you need the low light sensitivity (most of my shooting is in the daytime). It is the best digital M body available... and worth upgrading if you feel you need the advantages, but most of us (including me) really don't need to shoot at ISO 50,000. All three are excellent cameras... any one of which will deliver the goods in true Leica style. While I would love to get an M10, I'm going to hold off for now, and continue shooting with my M-262.

I went with a 262, even though the prices for the 240 and 262 were essentially the same. The live-view on the 240 is not terribly well implemented, with restrictions on the magnification patch position and a less than state of the art EVF. I preferred the lower weight of the 262.

I did not compare the 262's shutter to the 240, but against my M7 it sounds rather hollow and clunky...

  • 3 weeks later...

Well after serious thought I ended up with a light used basically new M 262 for $4000

I am really enjoying it so far.

I think I made the right decision for me, and who knows maybe in a year or so pick up a used M10
